The Information Technology (IT) revolution has been transformative, significantly impacting daily lives and shifting economies from resource-based to knowledge-based systems. The IT industry is characterized by its dynamic nature, with new technologies constantly emerging and others becoming obsolete. This rapid evolution has led to a strong global demand for competent IT professionals to manage and implement these technologies. Today, the IT sector is the fastest-growing industry, with the demand for core IT professionals consistently outpacing supply.
This imbalance has resulted in rapid growth in highly skilled IT occupations, low unemployment rates, and rising salaries, making it a highly attractive career path. Consequently, there has been an extraordinary demand for IT-related courses among students worldwide, including in Nepal.
Due to the rapid rise in computer and information technology use across various fields, universities worldwide are launching programs to meet the growing demand for IT specialists in different branches and specialties. In response, universities in Nepal also introduced various IT programs such as B.Sc CSIT, BIT, BCA, BICTE, BE-IT, BE Software, and BIM to cater to this growing interest and to prepare students for the numerous opportunities available in the global IT industry.
Tribhuvan University Institute of Science and Technology (TU IOST) launched the BScCSIT program in 2078. Currently, a diverse range of 24 programs, similar to the BSc CSIT program of TU, are being offered by 20 national and international universities. The flagship program, BSc CSIT from Tribhuvan University, is available through 60 colleges and enrolls over 3000 students each academic year. To get enrollment in one of these BSc CSIT Colleges, you have to appear and pass B.Sc CSIT Entrance Exam conducted by TU IOST.
Tribhuvan University also offers a variety of similar programs such as BE Computer Engineering, BIM, BIT, BCA, and BICTE, each as separate degrees, providing a wide array of options for prospective students.
A similar program by Pokhara University, the BCSIT, is offered through 15 affiliated colleges. Additionally, colleges affiliated with international universities in Nepal are introducing specialized and innovative courses, often focusing on practical applications.
Notable foreign universities offering degrees in Nepal include the University of Northampton (UK), Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation, London Metropolitan University, and Westcliff University (CA, USA). Some of their distinguished degrees are BSc IT Network Computing, BSc (Hons) IT Cloud Engineering, BSc (Hons) Computer Networking and IT Security, and BSc (Hons) in Computer Science & Software Engineering.
