MPH Programs and Colleges in Nepal

In contrast to medical education, public health education in Nepal has received relatively little attention or investment. Research in epidemiology, health information systems, and management has been underfunded. The Master of Public Health (MPH) degree in Nepal, as in many countries, is primarily geared towards professional practice. However, due to the limited opportunities for higher education in public health, MPH graduates often find themselves working in research and academic settings.

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) at Tribhuvan University (TU) in Kathmandu pioneered public health education in Nepal by introducing a two-year MSc in Public Health (MScPH) program in 1991, initially enrolling three students. Over the years, the program has evolved and is now known as the MPH degree.

The program aims to train skilled public health specialists equipped with management, research, and advocacy capabilities to meet national and international public health demands. The Department of Community Medicine and Family Health at the IOM offers an 18-month full-time MPH program for 20 students each year.

The B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) in Dharan is the first institution in the country to offer a residency program in community medicine for physicians. In 2005, BPKIHS launched a two-year, full-time MPH program through its School of Public Health. 

The Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS), a newer medical institute, has also started offering an MPH program. BPKIHS and PAHS are autonomous institutions supported by the government and affiliated with the Ministry of Health, whereas the IOM is part of the publicly run Tribhuvan University.

MPH Degree in Nepal

There are three main routes to pursue an MPH or related degrees in Nepal. The first and most straightforward path is for students who have completed a Bachelor in Public Health (BPH) to enroll in an MPH program to enhance their knowledge, skills, and expertise.

Due to the growing demand for public health officials in various INGOs working in disease prevention, and their preference for medical doctors, many students also pursue an MPH after completing their MBBS degree. Additionally, students with an MBBS background can opt to study for an MD in Community Medicine.
