The MSc in Public Health program at Kathmandu University will produce competent public health graduates with advanced knowledge and practical skills who will be responsible for designing and implementing comprehensive strategic healthcare solutions at the national and global levels, conduct public health research, and train people in their areas of expertise.
This course uses a variety of pedagogical techniques, such as problem-based learning, didactic lessons, journal clubs, online learning, seminars, and workshops. On the top of that, the students will benefit from Dhulikhel Hospital Kathmandu University Hospital's current rural community-based health initiatives, ongoing research efforts, and significant national and international collaborative relationships.
Objectives of the Program
MSc PH in Epidemiology
Graduates who successfully complete the MSc PH in Epidemiology will be able to:
- Use current data as a starting point for determining priorities and developing public health investigations;
- To identify the public health status and priorities, as well as to evaluate treatments, create and/or utilise current measurement tools in data gathering;
- Create goals and objectives to address knowledge and program gaps in public health; choose suitable research designs for treatments and investigations, taking into account their benefits and drawbacks;
- Identify risk or preventative variables that may influence outcomes and include them in a prevention strategy;
- To uncover relationships and forecast public health problems or remedies, use software tools to gather, organize, and analyze data;
- Interpret epidemiologic research findings, particularly their relationship to findings from other epidemiologic studies, probable biological and/or social processes, study limitations, and public health implications;
- Review the scientific literature critically, integrate findings from different research, and make appropriate public health recommendations based on existing information;
- Write a succinct description of an epidemiologic investigation's rationale, methodology, findings, and interpretation; and
- Apply epidemiologic knowledge in public health settings, particularly in the development and implementation of public health initiatives and policies.
MSc PH in Global Health
Graduates who successfully complete the MSc PH in Global Health will be able to:
Execute evidence-based health promotion and disease prevention programs, including management, administration, and implementation with the help of a team;
Analyze the most frequent causes of morbidity and death in new-borns, children, adolescents, men, and women throughout the world, both communicable and non-communicable, and apply this information to the design, implementation, or evaluation of health services or programs;
In planning, executing, and monitoring disease status and health initiatives, make use of data from main components of health information systems (e.g. surveillance, national registries, surveys, and administrative data);
Assess the efficacy of health treatments in a national and global environment using quantitative and/or qualitative skills;
Supervise medical staff who will help local development groups concerned with global health;
Analyze major global health issues, inequalities, and contributions to addressing concerns, including research and education capacity building;
Integrate robust epidemiology study designs into program evaluation and implementation science in low-resource settings;
Analyze how historical, political, and economic variables influence the development, maintenance, and reform of health and health-care systems; and
Use scientific approaches to develop, scale up, and/or evaluate interventions, as well as to improve health and health system determinants.
Eligibility
- Any individual who has completed a three-year Bachelor's degree in public health, nursing, physiotherapy, laboratory science, optometry, imaging technology, pharmacy, or human biology, or MBBS/BDS or similar health sciences degree with a minimum of 50% score will be qualified.
- Three years’ Bachelor Degree holders must have at least three years’ of work experience; and four years’ Bachelor Degree holders must have at least one year of work experience.
- The work experience must be in health-related area.
- Must have been registered in respective health professional council.
Admission Criteria
Candidates will be chosen based on their performance in the entrance exams and counseling. Candidates must achieve at least 50% on the entrance exam to be considered for admission to the program.
The admission test will include fundamental public health topics (40 percent), epidemiology (20 percent), and global health (20 percent), as well as ability (20 percent ). The entry will be open for 2 hours (100 MCQs).
