BPH in Nepal: Programs, Eligibility and Offering Colleges

Nepal's Bachelor of Public Health (BPH) program is a specialized health professional program designed to empower individuals to significantly impact public and community health. 

These public health colleges equip students with essential knowledge and skills in epidemiology, health promotion, environmental health, and healthcare management. With a strong emphasis on research, community engagement, and evidence-based practice, BPH programs prepare students to tackle public health challenges and enhance the well-being of individuals and communities. 

Bachelor of Public Health (BPH) course objectives:

  1. To develop skills in measurement, design, analysis, and evaluation for applied public health sciences research and programme management.
  2. Train and develop the skills on epidemic logical aspects of diseases and health system.
  3. Foster positive attitudes in health professionals and encourage them to provide more accessible and equitable Primary Health Care services for disadvantaged groups and communities. 
  4. Introduce and enhance the knowledge and practical skills in public health, primary health, health systems development, health economics, nutrition and environmental health.

BPH Colleges 

As of 2024, 34 colleges in Nepal offer one of the seven types of Bachelor of Public Health (BPH) programs available in the country and have a total enrollment capacity of 700 seats. Except for Kathmandu University, all major universities in Nepal run BPH programs.

To secure both paying and scholarship seats in the BPH program, an applicant must pass the MECEE-BL with high marks.

The Medical Education Commission sets the number of seats for BPH programs annually, leading to slight variations in the total and college-specific seat allocations. An academic institution must meet regulatory requirements to maintain its seat allocation.

BPH Seats 

In 2024, there will be 700 BPH seats in Nepal, with 174 seats allocated for foreign full-paying candidates. However, due to student visas and other issues, only a few international students, typically around a dozen, come to study BPH programs in Nepal.

Scholarship

Sub-Sections (4), (6), and (7) of Section 17 of the National Medical Education Act, 2018 and Section 20 of the National Medical Education Regulations 2020 has outlined this process about BPH Scholarships in Nepal.

Eligibility

  • Must have studied Physics, Chemistry and Biology from a recognized educational institution and passed with a minimum of 50 percent or 2.4 CGPA/GPA in the proficiency certificate level or Grade 12 Science group.

or

  • Stude from A-level or other similar programs with different grading systems must have studied physics, chemistry and biology with a minimum of 50 percent or 2.4 CGPA/GPA.  Must have got the equivalence letter. 

or

  • Must have obtained at least 50% overall marks in Health Science Proficiency Certificate Level or Diploma (General Medicine or Medical Lab Technology or Ophthalmic Science or Dental Science or Pharmacy or Radiography or Ayurveda or Physiotherapy) and registered with the concerned council.
