The first Homo sapiens who put a bunch of sticks together to get a roof over their heads were, in a way, civil engineers. Today’s civil engineers have more responsibility than ever. They build skyscrapers that reach thousands of feet in the air. They hang suspension bridges that support tons of cars and trucks each day. They create water systems that support millions of city dwellers. If you study civil engineering, you’ll learn what you need to know to work on the projects that make modern life possible.

Civil engineering is considered to be the oldest branch of the engineering profession, and is concerned with the understanding development of structures meant for public use. Civil engineering focuses on the infrastructure of the world through Survey, Planning, Estimation, Design, Construction and Supervision, Repair and Maintenance, and Operation of the built infrastructures. The infrastructure includes Roads, Airports, Railroads, Tunnels, Buildings, Bridges, Water Supply, Irrigation canals, Industrial plant buildings, Transmission towers, River navigation, Hydropower Plants, Wastewater treatment plants, Sewer System, Drainage System, Flood control structures, Landfills, Rope ways and many other facilities. In fact, no sphere of life may be identified that does not include the contribution of civil engineering. Thus, the importance of civil engineering may be determined according to its usefulness in our daily life.

Civil engineering majors learn how to use math and science to design big construction projects. Topics covered include the calculation of how much weight a structure will hold and the environmental issues that surround construction. The fall semester starts in September and the spring semester in March. Fresh Admissions are normally made at the beginning of the fall semester.

The objective of the course is to train qualified engineers to deal with design, construction, operation and maintenance of physical infrastructure and services. The students opting this program undergo systematic theoretical and practical learning in the areas of material engineering, structural engineering, environmental engineering, transportation engineering, water resources engineering, geotechnical engineering and surveying, so that they develop needed analytical and hands-on skill to deal with, and cater to, wide ranging infrastructure development tasks where civil engineers have major roles to play.
