ABOUT US

The global hospitality industry is one of the most dynamic career landscapes in the world. If you are considering a future in hotels, restaurants, resorts, or tourism — in Nepal or beyond — where you study matters.

SMSH was established 25 years ago in Lainchaur, Kathmandu, as Nepal’s first teaching hotel school. For over two decades, it has prepared graduates for careers that take them across the world, starting from right here.

In affiliation with Queen Margaret University (QMU), Edinburgh, UK, SMSH offers three internationally recognized degree programs: the BA in International Hospitality and Tourism Management (BA-IHTM), the BA in International Culinary Arts (BA-ICA), and the MBA in Hospitality. These qualifications hold equivalency through Nepal’s relevant educational authorities. A British university degree, earned in Kathmandu.

What sets SMSH apart is its teaching hotel model. Students do not just study hospitality and culinary arts — they practice it. Future chefs train in professional kitchens, mastering classical and contemporary techniques under industry-experienced faculty. Future hotel managers run live operations. Future restaurateurs learn what it takes to deliver exceptional dining experiences, not just read about it.

Learning takes place inside real operations: an on-campus training hotel, Papillon Rosé (Nepal’s first French fine dining restaurant), and the AHA Barista Training Academy. Every semester builds professional competency alongside academic knowledge.

Through strong industry partnerships, students access internship placements and career opportunities in leading hospitality organizations in Nepal and internationally. Many graduates are working in top hotels and resorts around the world today.

The college's mission is to deliver industry-relevant education at an international standard, in an environment that values excellence, responsibility, and genuine professional growth.

You do not have to go abroad to get a world-class education. But studying here might take you there.

Message from the Chairman & Founder Principal

Samir Thapa, CHE

Dear Students and Parents

For over two decades, Silver Mountain School of Hotel Management has stood as a pioneer in hospitality and culinary arts education in Nepal. Since our establishment in 2002 as the country’s first teaching hotel school, we have remained committed to transforming passionate young individuals into industry-ready professionals who embody excellence, integrity, and global standards in hospitality, tourism, and the culinary arts.

This Strategic Plan represents our vision for the next phase of growth and leadership. It builds upon our strong foundation — our unique partnership with Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, our hands-on learning model through real industry practice, our teaching hotel, our French fine dining restaurant Papillon Rosé, and our specialised culinary programmes — and our unwavering commitment to producing graduates who do not merely meet international expectations, but set new ones.

We are proud of what our students carry with them into the world: not just technical competence, but a deep pride in Nepali identity, flavour, and culture. Nepal has a culinary heritage of extraordinary richness — from the kitchens of the Newars to the spice traditions of the hills and the food cultures of every community across this diverse nation. At SMSH, we believe these flavours deserve a place on the international stage. We are committed to training our students not only in the classical and contemporary traditions of global hospitality and cuisine, but in the art of presenting Nepal — its ingredients, its stories, its hospitality spirit — to the world with confidence and pride.

As we navigate an evolving global hospitality landscape — marked by rapid technological advancements, shifting traveller preferences, sustainability imperatives, and post-pandemic recovery — this plan outlines clear priorities:

* Strengthening academic and practical excellence in hospitality and culinary arts

* Expanding research and innovation in hospitality education and practice

* Elevating Nepali cuisine, culture, and hospitality onto the international platform

* Enhancing industry partnerships and international exposure for every student

* Promoting sustainable, responsible, and progressive tourism and culinary practices

* Investing in faculty development and state-of-the-art training facilities

* Broadening access to quality international education at an affordable, locally accessible cost

* Deepening our commitment to personalised mentorship and student-centred learning

Our mission has always been to shape youth with global expertise and industry-ready skills. But we go further than that. We are not here to produce order-takers or routine employees. We are here to develop leaders — progressive, innovative, and socially conscious professionals who will challenge conventions, build enterprises, elevate standards, and carry Nepal’s name with distinction into the finest hotels, restaurants, and hospitality organisations across the world.

SMSH exists to put Nepal on the international map — not just as a destination of breathtaking natural beauty, but as a source of world-class hospitality talent and culinary excellence. At a time when students and families are making increasingly difficult decisions about education abroad, we are proud to offer something rare: an internationally recognised degree, delivered at home, at a fraction of the cost of overseas study, without compromise on quality, rigour, or ambition.

This strategic roadmap ensures we continue leading hospitality and culinary arts education in Nepal and the region — producing a generation of hoteliers and culinary professionals who are progressive in their thinking, sustainable in their practice, innovative in their craft, and grounded in the rich cultural identity of the nation they represent.

I extend my deepest gratitude to our dedicated faculty, staff, students, alumni, industry partners, and the broader Silver Mountain community for their unwavering support and belief in this institution. Together, we will write the next inspiring chapter in our journey.

The future of hospitality and culinary arts — in Nepal and beyond — is bright. Let us embrace it with passion, professionalism, and purpose.
