Choosing to pursue a bachelor's degree in Nepal offers a blend of traditional academic rigor and evolving modern standards. As of 2026, the landscape of higher education has largely shifted toward international alignment, providing students with degrees that are competitive both locally and globally.

Program Types and Streams

Prospective students can choose from a wide array of disciplines across several major universities, including Tribhuvan University (TU), Kathmandu University (KU), Pokhara University (PU), and Purbanchal University.

  • Information Technology (IT): Popular choices include BSc CSIT, BCA, and BIT. These programs focus on software development, cybersecurity, and data science.

  • Management: Options like BBA (Business Administration) and BBM (Business Management) are highly sought after for their practical approach, while the BBS (Business Studies) remains a popular, more theory-focused alternative.

  • Engineering & Science: Students can specialize in Civil, Computer, or Software Engineering, or pursue pure sciences through BSc programs in Physics, Biology, or Agriculture.

  • Medicine & Health: Programs such as MBBS, BDS, and BSc Nursing are offered through specialized medical institutes and university-affiliated colleges.

Duration and Credit System

The standard duration for most bachelor's programs in Nepal is now 4 years, structured over 8 semesters, the exception are programs like BALLB, BBMLLB, MBBS etc. This change from the older 3-year model was implemented to meet global credit hour requirements (typically 120–130 credits), making it easier for Nepali graduates to apply for master's programs abroad.

Important Considerations for Students

Before enrolling, students should be aware of the admission and financial requirements:

  • Entrance Exams: Most technical and management programs (like MBBS, BIT, BSc CSIT, BE/B.Arch, and BBA) require students to pass a university-level entrance exam. These are highly competitive and usually take place shortly after +2 (Grade 12) results are published.

  • Fee Structure: Costs vary significantly. Government-funded constituent colleges (like Pulchowk or ASCOL) offer highly subsidized rates, whereas private colleges affiliated with TU or KU Pokhara University may charge between NPR 4 Lakhs to 12 Lakhs for a full 4-year program. The cost for MBBS/BDS and other medical and allied health science programs are much higher which you can find on each individual program pages.

  • Foreign Affiliation: Many colleges in Nepal are now affiliated with universities in the UK, USA, or Malaysia. These often offer 3-year degrees and allow for direct entry without a national entrance exam, though they generally  are more expensive.

Note for 2026: If you plan to study abroad for your Master's, prioritize a 4-year program to ensure your degree meets the credit requirements of international universities.
