SOS Hermann Gmeiner Secondary School Itahari is located in the outskirts of Itahari in Sunsari district in the eastern part of the country. The school was established in 1993 and now it runs classes from Nursery to Class Twelve. There is Grade Teaching up to Class two and Management stream in Classes Eleven and Twelve.
ABOUT
SOS Hermann Gmeiner Secondary School Itahari is a not-for-profit organization established in 1993 A.D. The school is in a space of 3.5 acres of land in Itahari Sub- Metropolitan City, Sunsari, Province No. 1, Nepal. The school is about 3 km away from downtown Itahari. SOS Hermann Gmeiner Secondary School Itahari is one of the ancillary projects run under the supervision of SOS Children’s Village Itahari.
The objective of SOS Hermann Gmeiner Secondary School is to offer high quality employable education to the children from SOS Families, Family Strengthening Program (FSP), staff children, children from socially and economically backward strata and community children and ensuring that these children become a responsible citizen and lead financially self- dependent and dignified life. We build academic, vocational and life competencies, focus on reasoning, critical thinking, problem- solving skills, enhance employability and entrepreneurship. At present there are almost 600 students enrolled in the school.
SOS Hermann Gmeiner Secondary School is guided by the Formal Education Policy of SOS Kinderdorf International, Millenium Development Goals of the UN, majorly Goal 1 (Eradicate extreme poverty) and Goal 2 (Achieve universal primary education). Our school also works on Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 8 (Decent work and economic growth) as prime targets.
The School Management Committee (SMC) of SOS Hermann Gmeiner Secondary School Itahari is chaired by the Village Director of SOS Children’s Village Itahari. Subsequently, the school has also a team named School Operation Team. The SMC delegates its authority to School Operation Team and/ or member secretary. The School Operation Team is focused on the best utilization of resources at school and concerned with discussing and solving problems occurred in day- to day operations of the school ensuring the implementation of plan, policies and programs successfully in order to align school activities with the Vision, Mission, Values and Objectives of the organization.

Library
The library of SOS Hermann Gmeiner Secondary School Itahari provides a rich learning environment to students. There are approximately 8,000 printed resources available that meets both the learning and research needs of students and teachers. The printed resources include books, reports, encyclopedia, magazines, periodicals etc. Besides reading activity, our library provides an atmosphere for performing project works too. The librarian manages learning resources while keeping the library users’ needs in mind.
There’s even a separate book corner in each class from grade nursery to two. The book corner is resourceful enough that has an engaging collection like books of fairy tales, animals, nature etc. in English.
Computer Labs
The lab of SOS Hermann Gmeiner Secondary School Itahari is another learning hub that engages students with meaningful activities, embedded in purposeful subject- related contexts. The computer lab incorporates essential features for learning and research work. The lab has an acceptable infrastructure for ICT that includes 24 computers, stable internet connectivity, projector and the screen and security measures like filters and site blockers. The lab is configured in ‘U’ shape model which allows teacher for monitoring student activity. The trained ICT Personnel troubleshoots problems with computers and other equipment; assists users for full utilization of available hardware and software. Additionally, our IT Focal Person also plays a crucial role orienting and training students and parents for connection to virtual classes and communication channels during lockdown periods and supporting teachers for the use of ICT in classrooms.
Science Labs
SOS Hermann Gmeiner Secondary School Itahari has a well- equipped laboratory that offers students hands- on experience and make a scientific argument through enhanced learning experiences. Students do develop scientific ways of working in collaboration with teachers and carry out various kinds of experiments and draw conclusions. This joint coordination of students and teachers in science lab has raised the self- confidence and developed the scientific attitude of students. Students learn to use the tools and conventions of science, develop practical skills and also develop teamwork abilities. Science teachers ensure ‘Health and Safety Standards’ in the labs and/or in areas of their work.
