On the occasion of the 59th Birth Anniversary of His Majesty the King Gyanendra Vir Bikram Shah Dev, the then Vice-Chairman of the Council of Ministers, Kritinidhi Bishta inaugurated Sainik Awasiya Mahavidyalaya in Dharan, which was previously known as Gyanendra Sainik Purwanchal Awasiya Mahavidyalaya. In the first year of its establishment, the Mahavidyalaya had 99 students, comprising of 82 male and 17 female students, who were enrolled for class 4. The Mahavidyalaya had 5 teachers, 8 staff, and some army personnel. The first principal of the Mahavidyalaya was Mr. Aj Bahadur KC, and the first liaison officer was Major Kisan Singh Bhandari. The Mahavidyalaya spans across an area of 12 bigha 11 kattha 2 dhur, and so far, 1,148 students have completed their studies from this institution.

ABOUT

Sainik Awasiya Mahavidyalaya, Dharan was founded on July 7, 2006, in Ward No. 13, Fusre, Sunsari District, with the sacred goal of promoting all-round development and positive transformation of society and the nation through education. The institution's motto is "ज्ञानेन परमो सेवा", which translates to 'providing knowledge is the greatest service.' The primary objective of the Mahavidyalaya is to prepare patriotic, disciplined, competent, and dutiful citizens by providing quality education that aligns with national education policies to children of serving and retired Nepali Army personnel, as well as civilians.

The institution has achieved remarkable academic and extracurricular accomplishments by fostering students' all-round development through various ECA/CCA activities. Each academic session, the institution admits 60% military and 40% non-military students into class 6 and class 11 (Science) through an open entrance examination.

Mission and Objectives

We provide quality education to the children of in-service and retired army personnel and civilians at affordable fees. We focus on our student’s full potential of mind, body and spirit. We continue to strive to impart knowledge and skills based education through modern learning and teaching approaches to develop 21st century skills. We give our student a platform to unleash their talents through different ECA/CCA. We strive to instill in our students a sense of discipline, moral values and character building in addition to developing their intellect with the help of all the concerned stakeholders.

Salient Features

Hostel

The Mahavidyalaya accommodates male students in hostels and female students are day scholars, with exceptions for board exam preparation. The current academic session has 573 students, with residential students housed in four houses, each with subject-specific housemasters and other staff providing round-the-clock care. The Mahavidyalaya's academic calendar outlines various activities, including holiday programs to alleviate loneliness, regular sports competitions to foster a competitive spirit, and cleaning activities to promote social responsibility. The students learn time management by following different schedules in winter and summer.

Library

Since it's establishment in 2062, it has had a large collection of hard copies of reference materials and literature for students. To keep the library up-to-date and dynamic, the trend is to add the latest versions of reference materials, textbooks, and best-selling literature from both domestic and international sources. The library also subscribes to daily national and local newspapers, periodicals, and magazines to provide students with current world news. All students are eligible to become members of the central library and borrow books of their choice for specific periods of time. E-library has also been recently introduced.

Transportation

The Mahavidyalaya owns four school buses and a microbus for the transportation of female day scholars. The bus service is available up to Biratchowk in the east, and there is also a regular bus route for female students from Itahari and across Dharan City.

ECA & CCA 

Various extracurricular and co-curricular activities are offered at this Mahavidyalaya to promote physical, mental, and intellectual development of its students, which include sports competitions, literary activities, and competitions in painting, dancing, instrumental, elocution, drama, quiz, spelling, and gardening. The Mahavidyalaya has achieved numerous accomplishments, such as winning the Lalit Ambar Depot Cup, being declared the best Junior Red Cross Circle, securing 100% results in grade 11 and 12 (Science stream), and participating in international programs through its Scout Troop.

2. Entrane Examination.

3. Student Interview (individual)

4. Interview with parents.
