Gorkha is the largest district in the Gandaki province, and the fourth largest in Nepal in terms of area. The total land area of Gorkha spreads over 3610 square kilometers, with Gorkha Bazar as its district headquarters. Besides its magnificent geographical features, it holds immense historical significance due to its association with the establishment of modern Nepal.

Geographical Boundaries: 

Gorkha is surrounded by Dhading in the east, Tanahu, Lamjung and Manang in the west, and Chitwan and Tanahu in the south, and Manang in the north. Moreover, it touches the border of Tibet in the east and north.

The district is further divided into the following local levels: 

  • 2 Municipalities: Palungtar and Gorkha Municipality
  • 9 Rural Municipalities: Chumanubri, Ajirkot, Barpak Sulikot, Dharche, Aarughat, Bhimsenthapa, Siranchowk, Shahid Lakhan, and Gandaki Rural Municipality

Physical Geography:

Gorkha is home to several mountain peaks of Nepal, including Manaslu, Himalchuli, and Ganesh. Four important rivers, namely, Chepe, Daraudi, Marsyangdi, and Budhi Gandaki, stream through the valley of Gorkha. The famous ancient Gorkha Durbar, situated on the hilltop, is one of the major historical attractions of the district.
