Minister for Education, Science and Technology and Pro-Chancellor of the Tribhuvan University (TU) Girirajmani Pokharel has proposed making TU a model central university while lauding the role of the University in developing Nepal's higher education.

Addressing the 45th convocation ceremony of the TU in the capital city on Thursday, Pokharel said that the TU should upgrade itself as a Centre for Excellence in the future by focusing on technology and research-based education to suit the global context.

While stressing to make education of the TU contextual, market-oriented and competitive in the global market, Pokharel hoped that the number of the students in the TU would go up due to distance learning, credit transfer and other innovative steps. "The TU should not delay to take steps to promote research, creation and innovation. It should exhibit its exemplary roles to other universities too," the Education Minister said.

During the programme, Pokharel sought the graduated students' knowledge and skills for the country's development. Also speaking at the programme, TU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Dharmakanta Baskota claimed the TU's educational programmes being of internationally standard and also promised to ensure quality for producing more competitive human resources.

According to the officials, a total of 10,183 students graduated from the TU during the past one year period.
