Physiotherapy practice was started in Nepal 45 years back with some of the health professionals selling need of physiotherapy for patients. Few nurses in government hospitals were provided with physiotherapy training who continued their job as therapists.
Need for physiotherapy gradually increased among medical practicioners. Later certificated level in physiotherapy (CPT) was started by inpatient in institute of medicine (IOM) in 1983 AD. IOM produced few batches but in the 1990s the course was stoped.
With same aim, certificated level in physiotherapy course was again started by Dhulikhel Medical Institute (DMI) at Kathmandu Univeristy (KU) in 2003 AD. Which has produced almost 180 CPT graduates and stopped. In 2010, KU formally started Bachelor's in Physiotheraphy (BPT).
Currently, Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences (KUSMS) and Pokhara University offer formal undergraduate physiotherapy course.
Aims of Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) program:
To produce graduates who have the ability to solve problems and make decisions, have good communication skills and who have an in depth knowledge of the science and practice of physiotherapy, enabling them to practice safely, effectively and efficiently in a variety of clinical and community settings. Their practice will be patient centred and will include the promotion of health and well-being and the prevention of injury.
The primary objective of physiotherapy education is to prepare a trained health care professional within the country to meet Nepal's demand for qualified physiotherapy services.The graduates will have the opportunity to study further internationally in physiotherapy at masters and PhD level, as well as in related fields, such field as anatomy or kinesiology.
Salient Features
The four-and-a-half-year program of Bachelors in Physiotherapy costs around 11,00,000 to 12,00,000.
Eligibility
- Must have studied Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects from a recognized educational institution and passed with a minimum of 50% or 2.4 CGPA in the Proficiency Certificate Level or Grade 12 Science Group.
or
- Students from A-level or other similar programs with different grading systems should have studied Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects and passed with a minimum of 50 percent or 2.4 CGPA.
or
- Proficiency Certificate Level / Diploma in Health Science (Ayurveda or Medical Lab Technology or Radiography or Physiotherapy or Pharmacy or Ophthalmic Science) with minimum 50% marks in aggregate (for applying in related academic program like BSc MLT from CMLT, B Pharm from Diploma in Pharmacy)
or
- Proficiency Certificate/Diploma in Health Science (Medical Lab Technology or Ophthalmic Science or Dental Science or Pharmacy or Radiography or Ayurveda or Physiotherapy) with minimum 50% marks in aggregate and having studied Physics, Chemistry and Biology subject with minimum 50% in aggregate from National Examination Board Percent or 2.4 CGPA (CGPA) marks and obtained the equivalence of class 12th science group and should be registered in the concerned council.
Admission Criteria
Candidates who have been successfully selected in the admission process will have to submit the following original and 1/1 photocopy of the following documents to the concerned educational institution at the time of admission.

Certificate of qualification, Transcript and Character Certificate of 10+2 and SLC/SEE or Equivalent.

Admit card of the Entrance Examination.

Certificate of Equivalence for the students with certificates from foreign institutions.
Foreign candidates wishing to study in the vacated seat for foreign students must fill in the online application form mentioning the academic program of their choice within the time limit mentioned in this notice.
Provisions for Scholarships
As per Rule 20 of the National Medical Education Rules, 2077, out of the total scholarship seats to be awarded by the Government of Nepal at the undergraduate level, 55 percent of the seats will be distributed through open competition and 45 percent of the seats will be distributed on the basis of the following:

Job Prospects
- A Physiotherapist can go for documentation in a sub-specialty of Physiotherapy. Some of the specialty areas are like sports therapy, pediatric, electrophysiological physical therapy etc.
- After finishing the B.P.T program one can go for advanced education like Master of Physical Therapy.
- The aspirant who has attained the B.P.T degree can start his or her own Clinic in Physiotherapy.
