The Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Law (BEc LLB) program of  Kathmandu University School of Law is a five-year full-time study program with a total academic load of 188 credit hours spread over ten semesters.  The BEc, LL.B program is a new discipline in Nepal aimed at creating lawyers able to work as specialists in the courts or outside. This will enable students to consider the legal implications of financial and economic dilemmas as well as the economic impact of new laws and regulations.

The legal component gives the same focus and strength in B.Ec-LL.B as in the BBM-LL.B program. It meets all requirements of the professional undergraduate degree or Legum Baccalaureus. The students will be trained to take the bar exam and prove analytical ability in advising or representing clients in the court system as lawyers. It will meet all the prerequisites necessary for a general legal practitioner. They will also be equipped for many other rewarding career opportunities.

In the legal profession, the BEc-LL.B degree holders can become law officers, in-house advisers, legal consultants, or court officers. Graduates may work in public administration, real estate management, corporate business, taxation, or consultancy services.

In this course video, Dr. Bipin Adhikari, a Professor at KUSOL, discusses the groundbreaking introduction of Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Law (BEc LLB) programs in Nepal.

As an integrated course, the BEc-LL.B program aims at creating a band of modern lawyers who are knowledgeable and skilled in the basics of economics as well. Law and economics as a single subject area is the economic analysis of law and its outcomes that sharpens skills of a lawyer. The study of economics as part of the legal education helps the law students to benefit from the understanding of production, consumption, and transfer of wealth while working in the private or public sector.

Learning Outcomes

Through the completion of this course, we hope that students will be able to demonstrate the following skills:

  1. Application and learning of substantive and procedural laws, as also the drafting of pleadings such as institution of suit etc and understanding of the legal set up.
  2. Identify and analyze, from a legal perspective, economic issues relating to business decisions and policy-making in order to make informed decisions;
  3. Demonstrate knowledge about local and international laws and socio-political perspectives in order implement research strategies for practical implementations; and
  4. Demonstrate ability to apply legal principles to ethical issues, according to norms and standards, evaluate their effects, and suggest critical reforms and reevaluation where necessary, among others.

The program combines classroom knowledge with practical experiences, offering students an overview of legal issues in a rapidly changing economy. Emphasizing both international and Nepali laws fosters critical thinking about legal challenges in Nepal.

Students develop communication, research, writing, and argumentation skills, working collaboratively and independently.
