IBDP Gyaan Mela : A Celebration of Knowledge at Premier International School

Premier International School, Nepal’s first and only IB Continuum School, successfully hosted the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) Exhibition 2025, titled ‘Gyaan Mela’, on May 30, 2025, at the school premises. This annual event, a core assessment component of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), served as a vibrant platform for IBDP Year 1 students to present their intellectual inquiry and philosophical engagement with the real world.

Framed as a celebration of knowledge, the exhibition brought together students, educators, and parents from across Premier’s IB community—including the PYP (Primary Years Programme) and MYP (Middle Years Programme)—as well as from partner schools throughout Kathmandu.

This year’s theme, ‘Gyaan Mela’, meaning “knowledge carnival” in Nepali, was intentionally chosen to reflect both the celebratory nature of the event and its cultural relevance. The name resonated deeply with Premier’s diverse community of learners and families, reinforcing the school's mission to make global education meaningfully rooted in local context.

The TOK Exhibition is a cornerstone of the IBDP Core, where students select one of 35 knowledge questions prescribed by the IB and connect them to real-world objects that exemplify their responses. Through this process, they explore how knowledge is constructed, challenged, and understood in various contexts. Each student selects three objects, accompanied by written commentaries, to illustrate their critical thinking and epistemological awareness.

Throughout the event, student booths became hubs of inquiry and engagement. From AI and historical narratives to indigenous knowledge systems and ethics in scientific research, students presented thoughtfully curated displays—each exploring the complex intersections of personal, academic, and global knowledge. Attendees, including parents, teachers, and visiting students, engaged actively with the exhibits, asking probing questions and appreciating the depth of student insight.

Principal Shama Chhetri expressed her pride in the students, noting: “The TOK Exhibition encourages learners to think beyond what is taught in textbooks. It expands their thinking and equips them with the intellectual tools to question, reflect, and grow. I believe the skills they acquire here will serve them long into the future.”

The school management also commended the initiative, reinforcing the importance of the IB philosophy in nurturing globally minded, critically aware students. The TOK Exhibition, they noted, reflects the holistic and inquiry-driven nature of IB education, one that not only builds academic depth but also cultivates resilience, optimism, and intellectual independence.

The ‘Gyaan Mela’ was not just an academic event—it was a statement of what it means to learn, question, and share knowledge in a globally connected yet culturally rooted educational space. For parents who seek an education that prepares children to become confident global citizens while staying meaningfully connected to their own identity, the IB Diploma Programme at Premier offers a truly compelling destination.
