Nepal Police Inspector Exam · प्रहरी निरीक्षक

Grade: Gazetted Third

The Government of Nepal fills 60% of the vacant प्र.निरीक्षक (Police Inspector) positions through open competitive examinations, while the remaining 40% are filled through internal promotions.

To promote inclusivity in the police service, 45% of the positions filled through open competitive examinations will be set aside for the following categories of candidates, with allocations as follows: 20% for women, 32% for Indigenous/Janajati, 28% for Madhesi, 15% for Dalit, and 5% for those from backward regions.

Probationary Period:

A police officer appointed to a position of Police Inspector filled through open competition shall be on probation for one year.

Salary and Allowances:

A police officer shall be entitled to salary, allowances, and rations from the date of appointment or promotion. Currently, the salary of police inspector is: Rs. 48,126

Police Uniform:

Police uniforms are distributed to all newly recruited officers and jawans of all training centers according to the scale provided by the training center. The Inspector General of Police, with the Ministry's approval, will determine the color, type, and other details of the police uniform.

 Examination Scheme

The Nepal Police Inspector Selection Exam comprises a multi-phase process to ensure candidates meet rigorous physical and medical standards. The examination begins with an Initial Medical Check-up to verify applicants' essential health and fitness. 

This is followed by the Physical Endurance Evaluation Test (PEET), which includes running, high jump, sit-ups, push-ups, and a 3.2 km run, with specific benchmarks for men and women. Candidates who pass the PEET undergo a detailed medical examination to further assess their suitability for the role. In the third phase, candidates will take written examinations in three domains. 

Additionally, a Special Medical Examination may be conducted if necessary. The final phase involves a Skill Test and an Interview to evaluate the candidates' competencies and suitability for the Police Inspector position.

First Phase

Application Screening

Applications submitted properly and meeting the specified qualifications will be accepted.

Initial Medical Check-up (IMCE)

This will be conducted in accordance with the provisions of Schedule 6 of the "General Principles to be Followed in the Appointment and Promotion of Police Service Personnel, 2069".  Read more about Initial Medical Check-up Examination - IMCE

Second Phase

The second phase of the Inspector selection exam consists of a Physical Endurance Evaluation Test (PEET) and a Detailed Medical Check-up.

Detailed Medical Check-up for applicants of Nepal Police Inspector exam is conducted in accordance with the provisions of Schedule 6 of the "General Principles to be Followed in the Appointment and Promotion of Police Service Personnel, 2069". It includes following check ups 

  1. Height, weight and chest measurement.
  2. Chest Check up (X-ray report)
  3. Urine Test.
  4. Ear, Nose and Throat Check up.
  5. Dental Check up.
  6. General Physic Check up (Surgical Test)
  7. Blood Pressure and pulse check up.
  8. Eye Test ( Colour Blind and Vision Power )
  9. General Personality Observation.
  10. Psychiatric Checking.

Third Phase

According to this curriculum plan, the written exam to select Police Insepctor consist of three papers. The written exams for the first, second, and third papers will be conducted separately. 

First Paper: General Ability and Reasoning Test (GART) of 100 marks. 

In this paper,  25 MCQs are asked from General Knowledge and 25 MCQs are asked from reasoning test. An applicant should secure 40 marks to pass the examiantion. Total duration of the exam is 50 minutes. 

Two (2) marks will be awarded for each correct answer in the objective multiple-choice questions. A 20% penalty will be applied for each incorrect answer. No marks will be awarded or deducted for unanswered questions. 

Only answers written in English capital letters (A, B, C, D) will be considered valid for objective multiple-choice questions.

Second Paper: Language Proficient Test (LPT) of 100 marks.  

The applicant should appear for the language proficiency test for Nepali and English language and should pass each subject seperately.  The total marks of each subject is 50 and applicant should secure 20 marks on each to pass the examination.  Questions are of subjective types and the total duration of the examination is 3 hours. 

For subject-based questions, 10-mark questions can be asked in the format of:

  • A single long question.
  • Two or more parts of a single question.
  • Two or more short notes under one question.

Separate answer booklets will be provided for each section. Candidates must write their answers to each section's questions in the corresponding section's booklet.

Third Paper: Professional Orientation Aptitude Test (POAT) of 100 marks 

The third paper curriculum is divided into two parts: Professional Knowledge and
Professional Behavior test.

Applicants have to complete a Professional knowledge paper in 2 hours and 15 minutes. After that, they can take a 45-minute test on Professional Behavior. The total marks of the exam are 100, and the applicant should secure 40 marks to pass the examination. 

Professional Behavior Test will assess the candidate's ability to perform the daily tasks of a police officer, including crime investigation, patrolling, reporting crimes, handling traffic accidents, responding to cases of sexual and domestic violence, taking complaints, making arrests, detaining suspects, conducting searches, investigating cases, controlling crowds, and carrying out rescue operations.
The test will consist of three parts:

  1. Situational Travel Time (5 Marks): Candidates will be presented with a scenario and asked to estimate the time it would take to travel from one location to another.
  2. Incident Report Writing (5 Marks): Candidates will be presented with a scenario and asked to write an incident report based on the information provided.
  3. Simulation/Work Sample (5 Marks): Candidates will participate in a simulation or work sample that will assess their ability to perform a specific police task.

Fourth Phase

Special Medical Check-up

The special medical check-up will be conducted in accordance with Schedule-9 of the General Principles to be Adopted in the Appointment and Promotion to the Police Service, 2069.

In the special medical check-up, applicants are tested for HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B, and other complicated suspicious diseases. 

Fifth Phase

The fifth phase of the inspector selection exam consists of a Competency Test: Presentation and Competency Interview.  Both of these are oral tests. 

Competency Test: Presentation (10 marks)

For the competency test presentation, each applicant get 4 minutes for the preparation and 4 minutes for the presentation. 

Presentation skills are important in the workplace of police officers. Presentation exercises are a selection tool often used for positions requiring high levels of officer's work and/or presenting information.

Candidates will be asked to give a presentation based on a prior case study exercise, or on a group exercise they had previously undertaken. Similarly, candidates may be given information regarding a topic, and given a set amount of time to prepare.

These presentations will typically last for given time period and candidates may be allowed to use presentational tools provided by the organization.

The assessors will observe and evaluate the candidates 'communication and interpersonal skills, public speaking ability, persuasion and influence, confidence and ability to remain calm under pressure, clarity of speech and verbal ability, ability to interpret and relay information, ability to structure and design effective presentations, management of timing skills.

Competency Based Interview (40 marks)

Scenario-based questions are designed to get a glimpse of candidate's decision-making process and how they may react to various situations. Experience-based questions are focused on how a person responded to relevant issues in the past.

These types of questions are more about assessing candidate's decision-making process, and search for evidence one use in accomplishing tasks.

The competency test: presentation is conducted and evaluated according to the "Competency Test: Presentation Exam Operation and Evaluation Procedure - 2077." 

The final merit list of the candidates who have appeared for the fifth phase examination is determined by the total marks achieved across these three components (written exam, competency-based presentation and competency interview).

The top candidates from this merit list are selected for appointment to the Inspector post of Nepal police service.

Eligibility

Minimum Qualifications Required for Police Inspector 

Education Qualification 

The applicant must have completed graduation or equivalent degree from a recognized university. 

Other qualification 

  1. No conviction in any criminal case involving moral turpitude.
  2. No punishment for violation of human rights and humanitarian law.
  3. Not a member of any political party.
  4. Not a member of any terrorist organization.
  5. Height, Chest, and Weight:
    (a) Male - Height not less than 5 feet 2 inches, Chest 31-33 inches, Weight 50 kg.
    (b) Female - Height not less than 5 feet, Weight not less than 42 kg.
  6. Vision should be better than minus 2 or plus 2.
  7. Must possess a medical certificate from an authorized physician approved by the Police Headquarters (conducted during the examination process).
  8. Must be a Nepali citizen.

Age Limit for Police Inspector 

By the final date for submitting the application form, applicants must be at least 20 years old and not older than 25, except for non-gazetted police personnel participating in the open competition, who must not be older than 35 and must have completed basic training as a police constable or officer.

For technical police personnel, those appointed under the Technical Police Regulations, 2058 (in effect before the amendment and commencement of the Police Regulations, 2071) or those appointed to the technical police group under the amended Police Regulations, 2071, can compete for the position of Police Inspector in the General Police Group if they entered service within the age limit specified for the position of Assistant Police Inspector in the General Police Group.

Current police personnel (unclassified) must be at most 25 years old, as per Rule 40 of the Police Regulations, 2071 (with amendments).

Syllabus

The previously implemented curriculum for the aforementioned group is hereby canceled. This new Curriculum Implementation Date is 2079/10/19.

Even with anything written in this curriculum, the laws, rules, and policies included in the curriculum shall be considered existing (including amendments, deletions, or additions) three months before the exam date.
