Geomatics (Surveying) Engineering Technology provides training in the collection, analysis, storage, distribution and application of spatial or three-dimensional data used in land development. It is is a modern discipline, which integrates acquisition, modeling, analysis, and management of spatially referenced data, i.e. data identified according to their locations. Based on the scientific framework of geodesy, it uses terrestrial, marine, airborne, and satellite-based sensors to acquire spatial and other data.

Geomatic engineering is fast growing discipline (that focuses on spatial information, i.e. information that has a location). The speed of development in the field is same as of Information Technology. Geomatics Engineers apply engineering principles to spatial information and implement relational data structures involving measurement sciences, thus using Geomatics as Spatial Engineers. Geomatics engineers manage local, regional and global spatial data for infrastructure development.

School of engineering, Kathmandu University and Land Management Training Center (LMTC), Dhulikhel is jointly offering 4 year undergraduate program in Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in Geomatics Engineering.

This program is running under the memorandum of understanding between school of Engineering Kathmandu University and Land Management Training Center (LMTC), Dhulikhel with the decision of Ministry of Land Reforms, Government of Nepal. Under this agreement Ministry of Land Reform will provide financial assistance to run the program.

Why Geomatics Engineering?

Geomatics Engineering is a systemic, multidisciplinary, integrated approach to selecting the instruments and the appropriate techniques for collecting, storing, integrating, modelling, analysing, retrieving at will, transforming, displaying and distributing spatially geo- referenced data from different sources with well-defined accuracy characteristics, continuity and in a digital format.

Geomatics Engineering students study surveying techniques for land, cadastral, aerial, mining and engineering survey. The Geomatics Engineers will be equipped with basic science and Engineering knowledge and skills to have strong foundation in this Engineering profession.

The disciplines and techniques constituting Geomatics are: Computer Science, Geodesy, Topography, Cartography, Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing, Global Positioning System (GPS), Geographical Information System (GIS), WebGIS, Decision Support System, Expert System.

Eligibility to study B.E Geomatics Engineering in Kathmandu University

10+2 (or equivalent) examinations with minimum of 50% marks in aggregate and 50% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) or Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science (PMCs). OR Minimum 2.4 GPA in aggregate and minimum C+ in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM)  or Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science (PMCs) and minimum C in other subjects. Note: Students who have completed +2 in Biology stream must have taken additional mathematics course and passed it with cumulative PCM of 50% or 2.4 GPA to be eligible for the indicated programs.

Application for admission to the program is generally invited in the beginning of July.

Candidates must have appeared in Kathmandu University Common Admission Test (KUCAT-CBT) and obtained the required threshold score in the test.

Admission will be offered on merit basis based on CBT score (rank) for both open and reserved (quota) seat categories.

FInancial assistance

The Department of Civil and Geomatics Engineering in collaboration with Land Management Training Center (LMTC), Ministry of Land Reform and Management (MoLRM), offers scholarship for the students pursuing admission in Geomatics Engineering. The scholarship covers 35% of the Total Fee for twenty candidates, four from each development region. It is awarded based on KUCAT ranking of GE candidates from each Development Region. The candidates are requested to fill the development region criteria as per the citizenship certificate. Falsification of the above information will lead in cancellation of the candidate's scholarship and admission.

Students will also be eligible for other scholarship provided by KU as per the condition stated in the admission call.
