The Central Department of Public Health (CDPH) is situated inside the Institute of Medicine (IoM), Maharajgunj, Kathmandu. The department offers bachelor, master, and doctoral programs under the public health discipline. 

 

ABOUT

Tribhuvan University's Institute of Medicine initiated undergraduate Public Health education in 1986 and postgraduate education in 1991, marking the first such programs in Nepal. Until 2018, the Maharajgunj Medical Campus conducted the bachelor's and master's level public health programs. Recognizing the need to enhance public health education and expand academic infrastructure, the Central Department of Public Health (CDPH) was established in August 2018 by a decision of the TU executive council. 

As an autonomous entity under the Institute of Medicine, CDPH now oversees admissions and the teaching of the Bachelor of Public Health (BPH), Master of Public Health (MPH), Master in Health Promotion and Education (MHPE), Master in Public Health Nutrition (MPHN), and PhD in Public Health programs. CDPH also plans to introduce new public health programs in response to the country's needs.

  • Foster public health researches locally, nationally, and globally
  • Develop service-oriented academic and research activities.
  • Supports various level governments to develop public health policies and programs
  • Enhance linkage of public health education to public health practices. 

Salient Features

  • The Department is dedicated to supporting the fundamental health rights of people within the nation and worldwide through excellent teaching and research in the field.
  • Multisectoral collaboration and advocacy are adopted by the department with an aim to promote public health leadership locally and worldwide.
  • The department also aims to create and sustain comprehensive development of public health education.
  • The major goal of the department is to develop a competent and responsible public health staff that can safeguard and improve the healthcare system through evidence-based teaching practices.
