Do you want to be a GENETIC ENGINEER or specialize in subjects such as Agricultural Biotechnology, Food Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and many more? You could study and specialize in all of those through B.Tech in Biotechnology Programme .

Scope of Biotechnology:

Being the base line of research, biotechnology has its scope in interdisciplinary research field. 4 years of BTech in Biotechnology makes highly competitive manpower who have high demand in the field of agriculture, pathology, microbiology, biochemistry, tissue culture, genetic engineering, medicine, chemical, dairy and wine industry.

The Academic Director of Department of Biotechnology, Prof. Dr. Mukunda Ranjit who is also a Senior Academician at NAST (Nepal Academy of Science and Technology) states that since its inception, biotechnology has broken boundaries of science and research to take it to next level. It is basic to every field of science such as agriculture, medicine, food, environment, physiology and many more. Being a biotechnologist himself, Dr. Ranjit says that biotechnology graduates are needed more than ever to boost the research sector of Nepal. The graduates will have scope in different governmental jobs, agricultural sectors, private research firms, hospitals and various projects works in Nepal.

Job Prospects in Nepal:

Biotechnology graduates have high demand in governmental and private research institutes such as:

Some Governmental Organisations:

  • Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST)
  • Nepal Agricultural Research Council (NARC)
  • Department of Plant Resources (DPR)
  • National Ayurveda Research and Training Center (NARTC)
  • National Forensic Laboratory and many more.

Some Private Organisations:

  • Kathmandu Institute of Applied Sciences (KIAS)
  • Research Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology (RIBB)
  • Annapurna Research Center
  • Kalapas Biotech
  • Ficus Biotech
  • Center for Health and Disease Studies (CDHS)
  • Centre for Molecular Dynamics (CMDN) and many more.

Along with these institutes, there are many hospitals, production industries (CG, Gorkha Brewery, etc.), INGO/NGO projects, academic institutions, pharmaceutical companies, and so on where biotechnology graduates can find employment opportunities in. Moreover, there are many opportunities where students can work as a team and establish a company by themselves.

Scope of Biotechnology outside Nepal:

There are numerous job opportunities outside of Nepal for biotechnology graduates in similar fields and others such as engineering sector, law sector, corporate sectors, etc.

Moreover, BTech Biotechnology graduates can easily receive numerous scholarships (NFP, Erasmus, etc) for their higher studies in USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Norway, Netherlands, France, Denmark, Spain, Finland and others.

B.Tech students of Nepal are working in above mentioned institutions and several other food production labs, dairies, wineries, hospitals, national and international projects and pharmaceutical companies as well as doing entrepreneurship by themselves. Moreover, BTech Biotechnology graduates  have been studying will full scholarship and stipend in countries such as USA, Australia, Canada, South Africa, etc.

Reasons for Choosing BTech in Biotechnology as a career option:

  • Opportunity to work in numerous fields such as agriculture, food, medicine, tissue culture, genetic engineering, molecular biology, microbiology, pathology, biochemistry and many more.
  • Different Career Options in Nepal: governmental and private jobs, research labs, production industries, hospitals, INGO/NGOs.
  • Opportunities for entrepreneurship to develop own companies.
  • Prospects to mature professionally and improvise the field of work.
  • Chance to grow and learn within highly funded and respected research field
