Salient Features

University of Nepal (UNepal) is an initiative undertaken with the mission of transforming the higher education in Nepal in terms of its goals, relevance, quality, accountability, and potential contribution to realize our national aspiration for “Prosperous Nepal, Happy Nepali”.

Academic Philosophy & Pedagogy

The University of Nepal (UNepal) sets a new standard for undergraduate education, grounding a rigorous, interdisciplinary curriculum in the Liberal Arts and Sciences. Our mission is to prepare students to master their disciplines and apply knowledge with purpose.

Core Curriculum

The program begins with an interdisciplinary core, introducing foundational concepts across arts, humanities, sciences, and technology. Key components—such as Writing and Communication, Nepal and Beyond, and Community as Curriculum—foster critical thinking, contextual understanding, and empathy. Students subsequently pursue disciplinary majors, minors, and electives to balance broad knowledge with specialized depth.

The DRT Pedagogical Model

UNepal adopts a Dialogic, Reflective, and Transformative (DRT) model. This approach integrates dialogue, reflection, and action to deepen inquiry, challenge assumptions, and engage effectively with both local and global contexts.

Academic Approaches

We ensure learning is flexible, student-centered, and innovative through the following pillars:

  • T-Model Learning: Combines interdisciplinary breadth with disciplinary depth.

  • Applied Innovation: Emphasizes Innovative Through Action and Degrees with Skills.

  • Contextual Engagement: Prioritizes Community-Based Learning and Research-Minded Learning.

  • Holistic Development: Focuses on Student-Centered Education, Leadership Development, and National/Global Partnerships.

About

The University of Nepal (UNepal) is envisioned as an autonomous, world-class institution dedicated to preparing graduates who are capable of addressing both present and future challenges, improving their own lives, and contributing to the service of Nepal and the global community. Committed to fostering a culture of excellence among its students, faculty, administrators, and stakeholders, UNepal will be a student-centered institution of higher learning that prioritizes the nation’s needs while embracing the interests of its diverse constituencies. The university will remain accessible to students from all sectors of Nepali society and beyond.

UNepal aims to nurture graduates who are not only technically and intellectually competent but also equipped to navigate ethical, cultural, and moral dimensions of society. They will embody innovation, creativity, critical and independent thinking, and evidence-based analysis. With strong communication and collaboration skills, a sound understanding of research, and a lifelong passion for learning, these graduates will be prepared to take on leadership roles in their communities and the nation.

To achieve these goals, UNepal will offer undergraduate programs across a wide range of disciplines, grounded in the philosophy of liberal education; broad-based, student-centered, and designed to encourage both specialization and independent thought. The university will also develop graduate programs and advance interdisciplinary, holistic approaches to teaching, learning, and research. In doing so, it will uphold the democratic and pluralistic aspirations of the nation.
