Hariwan Municipality is one of the 20 municipalities in Sarlahi District of Madhesh Province. As per the 2021 census, the municipality has a total population of 49,988, comprising 24,405 males (48.8%) and 25,583 females (51.2%), with a literacy rate of 71.05%. Spanning 66.86 square kilometers, Hariwan Municipality exhibits the population density of 748 people per square kilometer. Administratively, it is divided into 11 wards.

According to the latest publicly available report of the Center for Education and Human Resource Development (CEHRD), Hariwan has 52 schools. Of these, 27 are private and 23 are public. The breakdown includes 37 pre-schools, 52 basic schools, and 19 secondary schools. Among the secondary schools, 8 offer +2 programs.
