ABOUT

Khumjung Secondary School, popularly known as Hillary School, is a historic educational institution located in Khumbu Pasanglhamu Rural Municipality–4, Khumjung, Solukhumbu. Established in 1961 A.D. by the legendary mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary, the school sits at an elevation of 3,790 meters and has played a transformative role in the development of education in this remote Himalayan region. What began with a single grade has grown over the decades into a full-fledged secondary school, currently offering classes from Kindergarten to Grade 10. In 1974 A.D., the school was officially handed over to the Government of Nepal.

The origin of the school is deeply tied to the goodwill between Sir Edmund Hillary and the Sherpa community. After the successful ascent of Mt. Everest in 1953 by Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, Hillary was inspired to give back to the people of Khumbu, whose support had been invaluable during the expedition. Moved by the words of a local, Urgen Sherpa, who said, “Burah Saheb, our children have eyes but they cannot see,” Hillary returned to New Zealand to raise funds. The first prefabricated aluminum classroom was donated by the Indian Aluminium Company and airlifted with the help of the Red Cross. This building laid the foundation for Khumjung Secondary School and is now preserved as the Hillary Visitor Center, inaugurated on the 70th anniversary of the Everest ascent in 2023.

Today, the school is recognized for delivering quality education in the region. Until 2010 A.D., classes were conducted in Nepali, but since 2011 A.D., the school has adopted English as the medium of instruction.  It currently serves over 300 students. Despite harsh climatic conditions and logistical challenges, Khumjung Secondary School has made significant progress in infrastructure and teaching practices. Thirteen classrooms are used for academic purposes, all of which are well-furnished. Nursery and Kindergarten students have access to a dedicated play area, while older students benefit from modern facilities like a computer lab with internet, a fully equipped science lab, and a library with over 2,000 books.

The school has recently introduced Smart Board technology to enhance classroom engagement and digital learning. There are also separate restrooms for boys and girls, including child-friendly facilities for younger students, and a pure drinking water supply system. Waste management is taken seriously, with separate disposal pits for degradable, non-degradable, and lead-based waste. A school hostel is also in operation, offering a well-equipped residential facility for students from distant areas.

The school also actively engages students in a variety of academic and co-curricular activities such as science exhibitions, educational excursions, drawing and debate competitions, and environmental initiatives. These programs complement the school's commitment to holistic education, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and community awareness among its students.

Today, Khumjung Secondary School continues to uphold the legacy of its founder by nurturing young minds in one of the most remote yet inspiring parts of the world. With a blend of heritage, modern education, and community values, the school stands as a remarkable example of educational progress at the top of the world.
