Kathmandu Metropolitan City is one of the 11 municipalities in Kathmandu District of Bagmati Province. As per the 2021 census, the metropolitan city has a total population of 862,400, comprising 438,256 males (50.8%) and 424,144 females (49.2%), with a literacy rate of 90.47%. Spanning 49.45 square kilometers, Kathmandu Metropolitan City exhibits the population density of 17,440 people per square kilometer. Administratively, it is divided into 32 wards.

According to the latest publicly available report of the Center for Education and Human Resource Development (CEHRD), Kathmandu has 763 schools. Of these, 618 are private and 121 are public.
