Through the Second Higher Education Project (SHEP) and the Regular Quality Enhancement Program, the University Grants Commission (UGC) is calling for applications from qualified individuals interested in pursuing a PhD Fellowship. These fellowships will be granted under both the SHEP and Regular provisions to support research funding.

  • PhD research proposal approved by the university and still within one year from the date of acceptance of the proposal

Public universities, institutions recognized or accredited by respective country’s national board or agency and the universities listed in the Times Higher Education World Universities Ranking, QS Top Universities, and Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) are regarded as recognized foreign universities.

The candidates fulfilling the following criteria may apply:

  1. M.Phil. or at least second division in Masters Degree, where M.Phil. Programs do not exist (e.g.: Science, Engineering, Medicine, etc).
  2. The candidate should be of below 50 years of age (52 years for female and underprivileged candidates) for Faculty PhD Fellowship and below 40 years of age (42 years for female and underprivileged candidates) for Fresh Graduate PhD Fellowship.
  3. Must be a Nepali citizen.
  4. In case of PhD Faculty applicant under SHEP and Regular provision, the candidate must submit the letter supporting the approval of study leave from the respective institution.
  5. The candidate who wishes to apply for both SHEP and Regular provisions must fill up separate forms with payment of Rs. 500/- (five hundred only) per form.

The applicant for the SHEP provision :

  1. Must be registered for PhD in one of the Universities of Nepal.
  2. Must be a full time(permanent/contract/temporary) faculty member in a University/ Campus for Faculty PhD Fellowship.
  3. PhD Fellowship is also available for Fresh Graduate who have completed his/her Master’ Degree within past five years.

The applicant for the Regular Quality Enhancement Program:

  1. Must be full time faculty member of the University /Campus.
  2. Must be registered for PhD in one of the universities of Nepal or SAARC. The interested candidate may also apply but they have to get registered within six months of selection.

The award of the fellowship will be made on the basis of following evaluation criteria:

  1. Candidate’s academic records.
  2. Extent of candidate’s research and scholarly publications.
  3. Significance, academic validity and relevancy of the research issues.
  4. Quality of proposed research design and analysis.
  5. Potentiality of making contribution in addressing academic and development issues. Preference will, however, be given to research addressing national issues and needs.
  6. Potentiality of generating new knowledge or exploration of new dimensions in existing knowledge or use of existing knowledge in new context.
