Recently appointed Vice Chancellors (VC) of various universities today said they would focus on research oriented studies. Speaking at an interaction organised by Education Journalists Network today, Prof Kailash Nath Pyakurel, VC, Nepal Agriculture and Forestry University, said he would stress research oriented work.

He said, “Despite having huge potential in agriculture, we have not been able to produce much; thus we have to incorporate research in the curriculum.” Prof Hira Maharjan, VC, Tribhuvan University, also stated that they needed research oriented programmes in TU as well. He said, “We should modify the curriculum to address the demands of students.” He added there was need of strong monitoring to assure quality education.

Prof Maheshwor Man Shrestha, VC, Purbanchal University, said research and quality education was a must for recognition of the university. He said, “Quality education and research work are important for capacity development.”

Other VCs said there were more political challenges than academic ones to run the universities.
