Kirtipur, Kathmandu – Tribhuvan University (TU), Nepal's largest and oldest public university, has issued a strong statement condemning recent violent incidents targeting its officials, staff, and property. Established to produce skilled human resources for the nation's development and to provide quality higher education, TU currently carries about eighty percent of Nepal's higher education load and maintains a strong national and international reputation.
The university emphasized that peaceful and fearless working environments are essential for students, professors, staff, and officials to engage in daily teaching, learning, and research activities. However, in recent months, various individuals and groups have repeatedly threatened university officials and staff, vandalized university property, and disrupted normal academic functions at both the Central Office and Kirtipur campus.
Most recently, on May 27, 2025, a group of 20-25 individuals forcibly entered the Vice-Chancellor's office, vandalized the secretariat, and attempted physical attacks on officials and staff. This alarming act of violence has not only hindered the university's ability to fulfill its national mandate but also tarnished its international standing.
Tribhuvan University has already initiated legal action against those involved and is seeking compensation for the damages incurred. The university also appeals for cooperation from the university community, the Government of Nepal, the media, and civil society to help maintain a safe and respectful environment conducive to higher education
Despite these challenges, the university continues to progress with the academic calendar, with ongoing teaching, learning, and examination procedures proceeding as scheduled for enrolled Bachelor's and Master's students.
