Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) on Sunday directed the Prime Ministers´ Office to suspend vice chancellor (VC) and registrar of the Purbanchal University (PU) to allow unimpeded investigation into the charges leveled against them.

The PU VC Maheshwor Man Shrestha and Registrar Niraj Pandey have been accused of corruption while granting affiliations to colleges who did not meet the university standards.

They have been suspended as per the CIAA Act 1990 to prevent them from interfering with the investigation, stated the CIAA Spokesperson Shreedhar Sapkota.

“The series of corruption cases were revealed soon after the exposure of a sex scandal involving Registrar Pandey,” said an officer with the inside knowledge of the developments.

“People were furious when they found that one SP had arranged a room and a lady for Registrar Pandey. He was found with the woman inside a locked room,” said the officer.

In 2012 and 2013, the university faced series of padlocking and protests led by the locals who were angry over the PU registrar´s involvement in leaking question papers with the help of student union leaders, the source added.

However, the trend of corruption was established by the former VC Ram Awtar Yadav, who was infamous during his tenure at the Purbanchal University.
