Pokhara University lecturers, who were sacked four days ago without prior notice today went on hunger strike.

According to Yubaraj Tripathi, Chairman of Pokhara University Contract Lecturers’ Association, at least six teachers began a 24-hour relay hunger strike today at the varsity’s main office, Dhungepatan in Kaski.

“Though Vice-chancellor Khagendra Prasad Bhattarai had vowed to sit for talks, he is yet to come into contact,” said Tripathi. Five teachers were injured when security personnel interfered in the sit-in of the agitating lecturers yesterday evening. “The university exploits us on the one hand, while on the other, security personnel torture us. Hence, we resorted to hunger strike,” said Tripathi.

As many as 95 lecturers along with six staff were sacked as per the decision of the executive council on September 18.
