The Curriculum Development Centre has proposed that the current system of higher secondary education be scrapped and made more generic like in developed countries.
In its proposal, the centre has recommended that five more compulsory courses be added for grades 9-12 and 34 classroom sessions be conducted per week.
The proposals come as discussions on ‘curriculum structure revision’ for grades 9-12, as part of the School Sector Reform Plan, are taking place at various levels. If the proposal were to be implemented, 11 and 12 graders would have to spend more time in school to study courses on general mathematics and contemporary studies.
Speaking at am interaction on ‘curriculum structure revision’ at the Ministry of Education, Joint-secretary Lawa Dev Awasthi said general mathematics has been chosen to meet international standards of high school education. The course is compulsory in Cambridge A-levels as well, he said. Moreover, five credit hours worth of project work requirement has also been added.
Ambar Prasad Pant, dean at the Tribhuvan University’s Faculty of Law, said legal education should also be included in higher secondary curricula.
CDC Executive Director Khagaraj Baral said planners will have to keep in mind infrastructure and availability of teachers before opting for education of international standard.
