Minister for Education Dina Nath Sharma today directed ministry officials to stop issuing ‘Letter of Intent’ to new medical and engineering colleges. He said, “The existing higher education institutions are sufficient for students. There is no need to keep on adding more colleges to already sufficient educational institutions.”
Sharma was addressing a meeting of Higher and Technical Education Promotion and Monitoring Committee at the ministry today. He said that there was a need to regulate existing academic institutions and improve their quality before adding new colleges to present list.
‘Letter of Intent’ is the final letter of approval issued to colleges seeking to begin new courses. Laxman Khanal, chief of Higher and Technical Education Section, said the meeting also formed a five-member committee under Arjun Bhandari, joint secretary at the ministry, to amend Higher Education Directives.
He said the committee will recommend ways to regulate higher education institutions. “The committee will analyse the needs of higher education institutions, especially medical and engineering colleges,” he said. Other members of the committee are Deans of Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University and Kathmandu University, president of Nepal Medical Council and Principal of KIST Medical College.
