Mathematics made compulsory in Grade 11 and 12

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has solved the issues regarding whether Mathematics is to be made compulsory or not in Grade 11 and 12. The meeting of the Curriculum Development Council has made Mathematics compulsory keeping in consideration that students get opportunities through the study of Mathematics in higher education.

Minister for Education, Science and Technology Krishna Gopal Shrestha signed the decision of the council on Wednesday.

In the decision, students studying Mathematics as a compulsory subject can study Social Studies and Life Skills Education as an elective subject and students studying Social Studies and Life Skills Education as a compulsory subject can study Mathematics as an elective subject.

The school should conduct equal experimental / practical exercises in every compulsory and elective subject. In such practice, experimental work, project work, community work, presentation, research, internship, extracurricular activities, sports, singing etc. can be done according to the nature of the subject. But the experimental practice should be done as prescribed by the syllabus of the related subject.

As soon as the decision was taken, Minister Shrestha informed that he had respected the decision of the Supreme Court and had made some changes in the structure and other unresolved issues. He said that with the decision, the problem seen in the curriculum format has been solved. The long-standing problem has been solved with the help of the Curriculum Development Center and all the members of the council.
