After the audio conversations between a reporter and chief administrator of one Medical college aired in setopati.com, few sitting justice and former Chief justice of Supreme court has been dragged into the controversy. They are reportedly taking bribes from Medical College owners to take decision in the favor of Medical Colleges .

The Centre for Investigative Journalism, Nepal carried out a sting operation and published the transcript of conversation between its reporter,  who posed as guardian of a student to secure an MBBS seat by offering kickback, and the chief administrator of the Universal Medical College, Bhairahawa , Dhruba Paudel.  Universal Medical College, Bhairahawa is affiliated with Tribhuvan University and runs various undergraduate (MBBS, BDS, B.Sc Nursing and PG programs (MD/MS programs).

In the conversation, Paudel apparently takes names of two sitting justices Gopal Parajuli and Cholendra Shamsher Rana and mentions the Supreme Court’s registrar as well as a judge of Patan Appellate Court as the key persons in the judiciary, who the medical college owners have been influencing to win cases.

Using the nickname “Daari” (which means beard), Paudel went on to claim that even the then Chief Justice Damodar Prasad Sharma, who sported beard, accepted Rs 20 million to make final verdict in a case in favour of medical college(s).

The Judicial Council on Monday decided to probe the alleged decisions made by some judges in favour of medical colleges by accepting bribes.

“We have decided to study the related documents and verdicts related to the cases (of medical colleges) in question. If the report (by Centre for Investigative Journalism, Nepal ) is found out to be true, we will take action (against the members of judiciary implicated in the report),” a member of the Judicial Council told.
