Institute of Medicine (IoM) has warned of revoking the licnence of Janakpur based Janaki Medical College (JMC) if it did not resume the classes immediately.
MBBS classes at the Janakpur-based medical college have not taken place since October 2014. The college studetns said that only 30 percent of the course has been completed so far.
Issuing a statement on Wednesday, IoM instructed the JMC management to resume the classes without any delay.
"Multiple inspection visits to the college by the IoM team had found that the theoretical classes were not being run," said the IoM statement.
IoM has also renewed its call to JMC to stop its student enrolment programme. On September 2014, the IoM faculty board had decided to bar JMC from admitting new students, citing that the college lacked infrastructure and faculties to accommodate more students. But the college was found admitting students, disregarding the directives from IoM as well as Nepal Medical Council (NMC).
Currently, there are 460 students at JMC, each has paid up to Rs 3.6 million for the five and half years MBBS course.
Many investigations have shown that JMC does not have the required number of professors and teachers. The JMC teaching hospital also lack facilities. The hospital rarely receive any patient. It was found hiring fake patients and faculty staff in the past inspections.
Dr Rakesh Shriwastav, the IoM dean, said that the JMC has the obligation to complete the course.
According to sources, dispute among the investors is the main reason behind the mismanagement of the college. Moreover, the recent change of management has made the situation worse.
After the dispute that protracted for over a year, the college management was recently taken over by a new team led by Ram Sworup Sinha, former education secretary.
"OP Pandey, the college chairman, does not want to step down from his position. We have investors, but no one is willing to take the risk with Pandey as the chairman," said Sinha.
Meanwhile, chairman Pandey expressed commitment to resume the MBBS classes within one week, in a meeting at the Ministry of Education. Education secretary, IoM dean and NMC chairman, among others, were present in the meeting.
A statement issued by ministry said that it has directed JMC to come up with its business plan and get it endorsed from IoM and NMC before presenting it to the ministry.
Ram Janaki Health Foundation which operates JMC said in a statement that all the shares of the college are now owned by Pandey and that the academic classes will begin from Monday.
