On the 13th of February, 2016, TU's Center for Economic Development and Administration (CEDA) sponsored an international symposium jointly organized by CEDA and Chonnam National University's Centre for Regional Development in Kathmandu. A dozen specialists from South Korea, India, and Nepal were asked to speak about the relationship between "Social Economy, Regional Development, and Poverty Reduction." Several additional distinguished visitors from both domestic and foreign organizations attended the occasion with rapturous applause. Their presence tremendously enhanced the event.

Dr. Yuba Raj Khatiwada, the event's chief guest and vice-chair of the National Planning Commission, stated that the South Asian area is still grappling with poverty alleviation, urging the adoption of a new strategy based on mutual collaboration to combat poverty. Through the execution of the three-pillar economy idea, Nepal has embraced a strategy of inclusive social and economic growth. He went on to say that cooperatives could be a useful tool for bringing inclusive development to the grassroots.

Due to economic constraints, TU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Tirtha Khaniya said the university, which is one of the world's largest in terms of enrolment, has been unable to provide quality education. Prof. Dr. Jumong Na, Director of Chonnam National University's Center for Regional Development, stressed the importance of mutual engagement and cooperation in efforts to reduce poverty and build a regional development strategy.

Prof Dr. Ram Chandra Dhakal, Executive Director of CEDA, spoke during the opening ceremony and emphasized the importance of cooperation for the SAARC region's social economy, regional development, and poverty reduction.

Prof. Dr. Santosh Chandra Panda, Dean of South Asian University's Faculty of Economics and former director of India's Delhi School of Economics, emphasized the importance of collaborating on issues of regional development and social economy. Prof. Dr. Sudha Tripathi, TU Rector and program Chair, believes that after a thorough examination of caste, calls, and gender issues, a strategy for poverty reduction should be developed.

Dr. Ram Kumar Phuyal (Associate Professor, CEDA, TU) expressed his gratitude to all those who helped make the symposium a success in whatever way. He explained that the event brought international experiences and technical exchanges among economists, development practitioners, researchers, and policy experts, as well as highlighting the policy debate on social inclusion, entrepreneurship, labor market and employment, regional development, and poverty reduction in the regions.
