With two committees formed to determine Plus Two colleges’ fee structure failing to do their job, the Department of Education (DoE) today formed a new high-level Higher Secondary School Monitoring Committee to determine the colleges’ fee structure and govern their operation.
The 11-member committee has Dilli Ram Rimal, the DoE director, as its coordinator. It has director of the Central Regional Directorate, representatives from Higher Secondary Education Board, Guardians Association Nepal, Nepal National Guardians Association, Higher Secondary Schools Association Nepal (HISSAN), Higher Secondary School Teachers Associations of Nepal (HISTAN) and education expert Umesh Shrestha as members.
Umesh Shrestha, who is also HISSAN president, said, “The committee will be looking after private Plus Two colleges’ fee structure, scholarship schemes, teachers’ management and facilities they provide.”
“The committee has taken shape at a time when most of the private Plus Two colleges have already completed their admission process. Its report will be helpful for next year.”
Shrestha further said the committee will define students’ quotas for each Plus Two college and prepare a code of conduct to end unhealthy competition among the colleges.
According to Shrestha, the committee will monitor anywhere between 25 and 50 schools in the Kathmandu valley with two weeks starting from mid-July.
Deepak Subedi, the HISTAN president, expressed doubts whether the present committee will be able to accomplish its mission.
Suprabhat Bhandari, president of GAN, lamented that the private Plus Two colleges are exploiting students by charging exorbitant fees.
