THE last ten years, especially the five years after the political uprising, have witnessed the Kathmandu Valley rising like a phoenix and showing the light of education to the entire country. Here a large number of educational institutions have come up, churning out thousands of aspiring professionals equipped with quality education.

Earlier reputed for the deteriorating law and order and crumbling industrial infrastructure, it became important for the area to rise against all odds to wash off its old image and atone for its bad past. Thanks to the massive private participation in education since the Nineties, more than a decade later, the area is springing up with students all over the country who throng the Kathmandu Valley for quality education. Hundreds of institutes - equipped with technical know-how to train students in a wide range of streams - have opened a plethora of opportunities for the student community to select from.

With students being churned out en masse from schools and with opportunities of higher education few and far between the moffusil towns and villages, all attention is turned to the valley. As a result, students who once had to go overseas are now queuing up to get admission in any of the valley’s institutes.

The list of educational programmes offered is no doubt impressive, starting from streams of management and engineering to courses that are linked to the travel and tourism industry. Infrastructure-wise, most of these education hubs are huge concrete structures offering an array of facilities under one roof. These range from internet broadband connectivity, a fully-equipped library, mess facility and modern laboratories. The relatively easy connectivity, too, is a boon for these mushrooming institutes and schools.

The most popular streams that have emerged are management, engineering and information technology education, and if you take a trip in and around the Ring Road, you will find many such institutions abound. The same is true if you travel beyond. With no dearth of funds, private players are now stepping into the world of academics to offer courses in job-oriented streams like catering and food technology, hotel management and cutting-edge technologies. Thus, the Kathmandu Valley as a whole stands on the threshold of a revolution in higher education.
