Kathmandu, 21st Baisakh — Senior physician and former Vice-Chancellor of Patan Academy of Health Sciences, Dr. Arjun Karki, has been appointed as the first Vice-Chancellor of University of Nepal. The decision was finalized by the university’s Board of Trustees following recommendations from a committee constituted under the Nepal University Act, 2081.
Dr. Karki, renowned for his contributions to healthcare education and institutional reforms, brings decades of experience to the role. His appointment underscores the university’s focus on strengthening governance and academic excellence. Concurrently, Dr. Surya Raj Acharya, a distinguished expert in public policy and infrastructure development, has been named the first Registrar of the University of Nepal.
The Board of Trustees, acting on the recommendation committee’s advice and in consultation with the Chancellor, confirmed both appointments in line with statutory provisions. As per the Nepal University Act, the Board of Trustees serves as the institution’s highest governing body. Unlike other universities and academies where the Prime Minister serves as the Chancellor, the University of Nepal is currently led by Dr. Bindu Nath Lohani as its Chancellor.
The Council’s composition includes prominent figures such as Prof. Dr. Ram Manohar Shrestha, Dr. Bimala Rai Paudyal, Er. Lal Krishna KC, Dr. Jagadish C. Pokharel, Mr. Rameshore Khanal, and Mrs. Chandani Joshi, etc. Their collective expertise spans governance, law, engineering, and public administration, reflecting the university’s multidisciplinary vision.
Dr. Karki and Dr. Acharya are expected to assume their roles immediately, steering Nepal University toward its mandate of fostering innovation, research, and national development. Observers have lauded the appointments as a strategic step to align the institution with global educational standards.
