Next May, Champlain College and the Office of International Education are offering Champlain stakeholders the chance of a lifetime to travel to Nepal.
The trip, called "Kalapatthar Everest Tea House Trek," is in collaboration with US Sherpa International, LLC, owned and operated by Champlain College alumni Ongyel Sherpa. The itinerary includes 16 days in Nepal, including 11 days of trekking in the Everest region. The other four days will consist of sightseeing and volunteer opportunities in local high schools, orphanages, villages, and other organizations in Khumjung and Nepal's capital, Kathmandu.
The trip, open to staff, faculty, students, alumni, parents, and friends of Champlain College, runs May 14-31, 2013. The trek is considered a "moderate" level of difficulty; on average, trekkers will be traveling eight miles a day. Over the course of 11 days, the group will trek through villages such as Tengboche, Namche, Pangboche, and Pheriche in the northeast region of Nepal, and visit settlements such as Lobuche and Gorak Shep near Mount Everest.
The number of participants determines the total cost of the trip; the more participants, the less it will cost. The three-deposit payments currently total $2,470, which includes Sherpa guides, sightseeing entrance fees, lodging, meals, domestic airfare in Nepal, and airport pick up. The cost does not include airfare to or from Nepal, a Nepal visa, or insurance. The Office of International Education will assist in getting group rates and providing airfare resources for interested individuals.
The first payment deadline to reserve a space is due no later than January 1. The second two deposit payments are due February 1 and March 15. All deposits are non-refundable. A discount incentive is offered for those who submit their initial deposits before the first deadline. There will be a $100 discount for those who submit their initial deposits in November, and a $50 deductible for participants who submit them in December.
There are a limited number of spaces available for this trip. Prior to departure, there will be opportunities for the group to meet. For those who are local, there will be opportunities for group training hikes in Vermont, and there will be a pre-departure meeting in early May.
