Cambridge International Examinations and the British Council are delighted to announce the development of a new qualification for secondary school students in Nepal. Cambridge International Examinations is the world’s largest provider of international education programmes and qualifications for 5 to 19 year olds. Our qualifications are taken in over 160 countries and recognised by universities, education providers and employers across the world.

During a recent Cambridge schools meeting in Nepal, Cambridge International Examinations made a commitment to offer Cambridge International AS Level Nepal Studies. This followed a close collaboration on the introduction of the subject between the Ministry of Education, the British Council and the Cambridge schools in Nepal.

Over 20 schools have confirmed the adoption of the new qualification, which will be introduced for first teaching in 2015.

The new qualification will focus on certificating students’ knowledge of the historical, geographical, social, political, and economical affairs of Nepal. It will also help students to relate various topics of their country within other Cambridge International A Level subjects.
The introduction of Nepal Studies at AS Level offers a number of specific benefits to students in
Nepal, international students, as well as education institutions such as:

  1. Providing a new global reach for the study of Nepal, as this new A Level subject will be available to all international A Level students worldwide, as an elective subject.
  2. Providing an opportunity for the collaboration on curriculum and syllabus design between Ministry of Education in Nepal, education institutions and universities in Nepal, the University of Cambridge and the British Council.
  3. Providing students in Nepal with their own opportunity to pursue their studies of Nepal at this advanced level.

Ann Puntis, Chief Executive of Cambridge International Examinations said: “We understand how important it is for Nepalese students in our schools to have a solid understanding of their country’s culture, heritage and relationship with the wider world. That is why we have committed to work with our partners in Nepal, to develop a new qualification that meets our learners’ needs and provides them with the skills and knowledge required for future success in education and in life beyond.”
Brendan McSharry OBE, Country Director, British Council Nepal said: “AS is a high level of academic attainment and students who will study for and gain a University of Cambridge AS Level certificate in Nepali Studies should feel proud of their achievement. The impact over the next few years on broader secondary and tertiary education in Nepal will undoubtedly be significant and for the good. The Ministry of Education’s key involvement in and approval of this new certificate is very forward looking and is much appreciated “

Cambridge International AS and A Level, typically for learners aged 16 to 19, are regarded as a passport to success in education, university and employment and are taken in over 125 countries.
They are taken by thousands of learners every year who gain places at leading universities worldwide and develop independent learning and constructive thinking skills – abilities which universities value highly.
34 schools in Nepal now offer Cambridge syllabuses and qualifications, with examination entries rising by 27% since 2011.
