218 Candidates Apply for Vice-Chancellor Posts at Eight Universities; Tribhuvan University Leads
A total of 218 applications have been submitted for the vacant Vice-Chancellor positions across eight universities nationwide, according to the Ministry of Education and Sports, which made the complete applicant list public on Wednesday.
Among all institutions, Tribhuvan University attracted the highest interest, drawing 50 applicants. Purbanchal University and Pokhara University followed closely, each receiving 36 applications. Rajarshi Janak University recorded 27 applications, while Mid-Western University and Far-Western University received 20 and 19 applications, respectively. Agriculture and Forestry University had 15 applicants, and Lumbini Buddhist University received the fewest, with 11 applications.
The recruitment drive was launched following the government's removal of previous Vice-Chancellors and other senior officials through an ordinance. The Ministry issued an open call on Baisakh 25 (May 8), providing a 10-day application window to fill the positions through a fresh appointment process.
To uphold transparency and merit in the selection, a recommendation committee has been established under the chairmanship of Education, Science, and Technology Minister Sashit Pokhrel. The committee is set to form an expert sub-committee to thoroughly assess each candidate.
As part of the evaluation, all applicants are required to submit a 5,000-word strategic vision paper along with a comprehensive action plan addressing key areas, including university reform, research expansion, administrative improvement, and academic quality enhancement.
