Nepal has moved a step closer to reforming its higher education system with the implementation of a revised National Academic Calendar, aimed at ensuring timely, planned, and effective academic operations across universities.
Key Highlights
- The University Grants Commission has developed and enforced a revised National Academic Calendar for all universities.
- The calendar has been approved by the Ministry of Education and Sports through a ministerial-level decision.
- Universities are required to follow a unified schedule for admissions, teaching, examinations, and publication of results.
- The reform supports the government’s 100-day governance reform agenda, particularly the goal of publishing undergraduate and postgraduate results on time.
- The initiative is expected to bring greater discipline and reliability to Nepal’s higher education system.
The revised academic calendar updates the version that was approved and implemented in September 2023, incorporating changes to address current academic challenges and operational delays faced by universities. To ensure the calendar remained relevant and practical, the University Grants Commission formed an Academic Calendar Revision Committee to review implementation issues and propose improvements. Based on the committee’s recommendations submitted in May 2026, necessary amendments were made and formally approved by the Ministry. According to officials at the Commission, the enforced calendar will ensure that key academic activities such as student admissions, classroom teaching, examinations, and result publication are carried out according to a fixed timetable. Authorities believe that consistent implementation across universities will reduce uncertainty for students and faculty, improve academic planning, and strengthen overall confidence in Nepal’s university education system.
