Applied Knowledge

Welcome to the Fundamentals level! This is one of two levels that make up the foundation of your accounting journey. In this level, you will be introduced to three essential subjects – Business & Technology (BT), Management Accounting (MA), and Financial Accounting (FA). The exciting part is that you can take these subjects in any order that suits you best! Once you successfully complete all three subjects, you will be ready to level up and move on to the next stage -– Applied Skills.

Business & Technology (BT)

The ACCA syllabus'’s fundamental paper on business and technology (BT) is designed to give students a firm foundation in the fundamental ideas and ideas of business and technology. It provides an overview of how technology is changing the business landscape and how businesses can leverage technology to improve performance and gain a competitive edge. BT is the first paper ACCA students encounter, and it plays a crucial role in preparing them for the remainder of the curriculum.

Management Accounting (MA)

The ACCA Management Accounting (MA) paper covers the purpose and role of management accounting, types and behavior of costs, techniques for cost management and control, business math, standard costing and budgeting, cost accounting techniques, and decision-making techniques. It provides a comprehensive overview of management accounting principles and practices essential for accounting, finance, and business management.

Financial Accounting (FA)

The ACCA Financial Accounting (FA) paper aims to equip candidates with a comprehensive understanding of financial accounting principles and concepts, as well as technical proficiency in double-entry accounting techniques. It is a foundation paper for the ACCA qualification, covering topics such as the context and purpose of financial reporting, qualitative characteristics of financial information, accounting systems, recording transactions, and preparing financial statements for single entities and simple groups. Applied Skills

Corporate and Business Law (CBL)

The Corporate and Business Law (CBL) paper of ACCA helps students access the knowledge and understanding of the legal and regulatory frameworks governing businesses and corporations. The paper is divided into two sections; the first section covers general legal principles such as employment and company law, while the second section focuses on specific legal areas relevant to businesses such as taxation and intellectual property law. Performance Management (PM)

The PM paper offered by ACCA focuses on managing and controlling organizational performance through financial and non-financial data analysis. This paper covers management accounting techniques, performance measurement systems design, strategic performance measurement, performance evaluation, and corporate failure identification, and emerging issues in performance management, including technology and data analytics.

Taxation (TX)

The Taxation (TX) paper of the ACCA qualification covers a broad range of topics related to taxation, including both domestic and international aspects. Students will learn about the UK tax system and its administration, as well as specific taxes such as income tax, capital gains tax, corporation tax, inheritance tax, and value-added tax (VAT). Financial Reporting (FR)

To excel in the Financial Reporting (FR) paper in ACCA, students are expected to use their prior understanding of accounting principles and expand their knowledge further. The paper covers a range of subjects including financial statement preparation, the accounting of assets, liabilities, and equity, interpretation of financial statements, and accounting standards and their implementation. Students must have a solid grasp of fundamental accounting principles, stay up to date with the latest accounting standards and regulations, and be able to apply their knowledge to solve practical accounting problems. In addition, students should have the ability to look over financial statements to gain insights into a company’s financial performance.

Audit and Assurance (AA)

ACCA Paper Audit and Assurance (AA) aims to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to conduct an effective audit engagement in accordance with the International Standards on Auditing (ISAs). The syllabus is divided into four sections: Audit Framework and Regulation, Internal Audit, Planning and Risk Assessment, and Audit Evidence and Reporting. Topics covered include the regulatory environment for auditing, internal audit processes, risk assessment, audit evidence procedures, and audit report preparation. Success in this paper requires a strong understanding of auditing and assurance principles and familiarity with the relevant ISAs.

Financial Management (FM)

The purpose of the ACCA’s Financial Management (FM) paper is to give students a firm grounding in the financial management principles and techniques applicable in the business world. Working capital management, investment appraisal, cost of capital, risk management, business valuations, and new developments in finance are just some of the topics that will be tested. Candidates who want to do well on the FM paper are encouraged to use approved study materials, attend approved tuition providers, and get expert advice.

Strategic Professional

The Strategic Professional level of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) is the final and highest stage of the ACCA qualification. It is designed to equip students with the advanced professional skills and knowledge required by accountants and financial professionals at the strategic level. This level consists of two core modules: Strategic Business Leader (SBL) and Strategic Business Reporting (SBR). These modules aim to develop students'’ strategic leadership, business management, financial reporting, analysis, and communication skills. In addition to the core modules, students must complete two optional modules from a range of choices. Completion of this level enables students to become ACCA members and use the designation “ACCA” after their name, indicating their high level of professional competence in accounting and finance. Strategic Business Reporting (SBR)

This paper of ACCA is a compulsory paper that aims to develop students'’ abilities in analyzing, presenting, and interpreting complex financial and non-financial information. It covers various topics, including the regulatory environment, ethical and governance issues, financial reporting, financial statement analysis, business valuation and forecasting, and integrated reporting. Succeeding in this paper requires a high level of technical knowledge, professional skills, and the ability to apply them to real-world business scenarios, as well as effective communication skills in written and oral forms.

Strategic Business Leader (SBL)

This paper aims to make students to be able to think strategically and apply their knowledge to complex business scenarios. To succeed in this paper, students must develop an understanding of the business environment, identify strategic options, prepare and implement a plan, monitor and evaluate the plan'’s effectiveness, and communicate effectively with stakeholders. Practice with past papers, enhance your analytical and communication skills, and stay up to date with current business issues to prepare for the exam.

Advanced Taxation (ATX)

The ATX exam by ACCA tests the knowledge and skills of tax professionals in various areas like taxation of individuals and companies, VAT, inheritance tax, international tax, and ethics. The exam assesses candidates'’ abilities through written and numerical responses. Candidates can prepare by studying approved materials, attending training courses, and gaining practical experience.

Advanced Financial Management (AFM)

The Advanced Financial Management (AFM) ACCA paper is a part of the Professional level papers in the ACCA qualification. The paper aims to enhance students'’ knowledge and expertise in financial management techniques and their application in complex scenarios. It covers various topics, including financial analysis and decision-making, investment appraisal, risk management, and corporate finance.

Advanced Performance Management (APM)

The APM paper is a Professional level exam that focuses on evaluating and managing organizational performance using financial and non-financial measures. The topic covers strategic performance management, performance measurement systems, strategic performance analysis, performance evaluation, corporate failure, and emerging trends in performance management.

Advanced Audit and Assurance (AAA)

This paper is a professional-level examination that builds on the knowledge gained from the Audit and Assurance (AA) paper. It aims to deepen understanding of the role of auditors and the assurance process. The paper is divided into two sections: Section A focuses on ethical and professional issues faced by auditors, while Section B covers the practical aspects of the audit process. The exam requires a strong technical knowledge of audit principles, the ability to apply that knowledge to real-life scenarios, and to make professional judgments based on ethical principles and professional standards

Exam Exemptions

ACCA exemption is a recognition of an individual's previous academic qualifications in accounting and finance or related fields. It means that an individual can be exempted from certain ACCA exams based on their prior academic achievements, allowing them to progress through the ACCA qualification faster. To be eligible for exemptions, an individual must provide evidence of their previous qualifications and complete an exemption application. The application is reviewed by ACCA, and if approved, the individual will receive an exemption notification specifying the ACCA exams they are exempted from.

Depending on your existing qualifications, exemptions could be awarded on:

  • The Foundation Level qualification
  • The nine Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills exams in the ACCA program.

Exemptions are not offered:

  • For the Strategic Professional exam.
  • On the basis of work experience.
  • For any exams or modules assessed as part of ACCA’s post-professional qualifications
