Kathmandu University (KU)’s Recommendation Committee, constituted to recommend candidates for the position of its Vice-Chancellor, has re-invited applications to submit until February 5,2025.

Key Details:

Submission Deadline : February 5,2025

Prior to this, the committee had opened an application for the post with a criterion of having PhD as a minimum qualification on January 2, 2025 and it had received 17 applications. Among them, the committee approved and made public the applications of 16 professors only.

The committee had faced criticism over the criteria from the teachers under the university’s medical school for being exclusive to medical sector as they said their highest degree is in MD/MS. A group of medical professionals had even filed a petition seeking to annul the eligibility criteria set by the Vice-Chancellor selection committee.

Following the complaints that professors from the medical field were excluded, the KU’s assembly had announced amendment of working procedure on January 17, 2025. As per the amended working procedure, the professors with a PhD or equivalent degree can also apply. So, the committee re-opened the application after amending the working procedure.

The committee chaired by Suresh Raj Sharma, former vice-chancellor at the university was formed December 14 as then vice-chancellor Bhola Thapa was to retire on January 19. Dr Arjun Karki and Janardan Nepal, a former government secretary, are the members of the committee.
