Mai Municipality is one of the 10 municipalities in Ilam District of Koshi Province. As per the 2021 census, the municipality has a total population of 30,732, comprising 15,130 males (49.2%) and 15,602 females (50.8%), with a literacy rate of 79.56%. Spanning 246.11 square kilometers, Mai Municipality exhibits the population density of 125 people per square kilometer. Administratively, it is divided into 10 wards.

According to the latest publicly available report of the Center for Education and Human Resource Development (CEHRD), Mai has 49 schools. Of these, 14 are private and 35 are public. The breakdown includes 41 pre-schools, 47 basic schools, and 11 secondary schools. Among the secondary schools, 3 offer +2 programs.
