Butwal Sub-Metropolitan City is one of the 16 municipalities in Rupandehi District of Lumbini Province. As per the 2021 census, the sub-metropolitan city has a total population of 194,335, comprising 94,849 males (48.8%) and 99,486 females (51.2%), with a literacy rate of 91.31%. Spanning 101.61 square kilometers, Butwal Sub-Metropolitan City exhibits the population density of 1,913 people per square kilometer. Administratively, it is divided into 19 wards.

According to the latest publicly available report of the Center for Education and Human Resource Development (CEHRD), Butwal has 105 schools. Of these, 65 are private and 36 are public. The breakdown includes 56 pre-schools, 86 basic schools, and 65 secondary schools. Among the secondary schools, 26 offer +2 programs.
