Birgunj Metropolitan City is one of the 14 municipalities in Parsa District of Madhesh Province. As per the 2021 census, the metropolitan city has a total population of 272,382, comprising 142,195 males (52.2%) and 130,187 females (47.8%), with a literacy rate of 76.04%. Spanning 132.07 square kilometers, Birgunj Metropolitan City exhibits the population density of 2,062 people per square kilometer. Administratively, it is divided into 32 wards.
According to the latest publicly available report of the Center for Education and Human Resource Development (CEHRD), Birgunj has 229 schools. Of these, 138 are private and 83 are public. The breakdown includes 181 pre-schools, 221 basic schools, and 96 secondary schools. Among the secondary schools, 46 offer +2 programs.
