Kalikot district is part of Karnali Province in the mid-western hills of Nepal. Its administrative headquarter is in Manma, within Khandachakra Municipality. According to local legend, the name "Kalikot" is derived from the Kalika Devi Temple, located in Kalika village of the former Mugraha VDC, a site of religious and cultural importance.
Geographically, the district is bordered by Jumla to the east, Achham to the west, Bajura and Mugu to the north, and Dailekh and Jajarkot to the south. Kalikot lies approximately 708 kilometers by road from Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu.
Kalikot spans an area of 1,714 square kilometers, making up about 1.18% of Nepal’s total area. The district is part of the mid-hill region and is characterized by rugged hills, narrow river valleys, and forested ridges. These geographical features support subsistence agriculture and small-scale animal husbandry, the primary livelihoods of the local population.
