UNESCO Prize for Girls and Women's Education

The UNESCO Prize for Girls and Women's Education honors outstanding and innovative practices advancing girls' and women's education, and in turn, improving the quality of their lives.

Established in 2015, it is funded by the Government of the People's Republic of China and consists of two US $50,000 awards to help further the work of laureates in this field. The prize directly contributes to Sustainable Development Goals 4 and 5.

Notice of invitation for the first time published for the UNESCO Prize for Girls and Women's Education: 2080/12/13

According to the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology decision on 2080/12/12, the Government of Nepal has been recommended for the UNESCO Prize for Girls' and Women's Education for the year 2024 from UNESCO Paris. (According to the information received from the recipient letter, the prize amount will be USD 50,000.)

Applications are invited from Nepali citizens and organizations who have completed remarkable work in this field.

Criteria for application submission:

a) Individuals, institutions, and organizations who have done significant work to educate women and girls can apply. Applications can be downloaded from the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology website, www.moest.gov.np, and the commission's website, www.nncu.org.np.

b) Individuals or organizations working for the education of women and girls should be in an operational state.

c) The application, along with the attached form, should be submitted in hard copy to the UNESCO Nepal National Commission's Secretariat, Singh Durbar, Kathmandu. It can also be submitted online to the commission's email unesconatcomnepal@gmail.com and website www.nncu.org.np. Upon submission, call the Secretariat at 4200559 to confirm receipt of the application.

d) The applicant entity should complete all the details in the attached form. Also, include the documents mentioned in section 6 of the application form.

e) The final selection will be made based on the agreements reached with the concerned authorities of the Government of Nepal regarding the operation of projects and programs (for example, understanding letters for projects operated under the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, or the current fiscal year with the Education and Human Resource Development Center/Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology), the recommendation letter from the relevant local authority where the project was conducted, evaluation and monitoring reports, registration certificate if applicable, and proof of renewal and updating. If any documents are not provided, the application will be rejected automatically.

f) The Secretariat will make selection Recommendations. The final selection for the award from the Global Competition will be made by the jury established by the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, recommended by the Director-General of UNESCO.

g) Applications must be submitted by 2081.01.03 (i.e. April 15, 2024). No action will be taken on applications submitted after the deadline. If you have any questions about this matter, please contact the Secretariat during office hours at 4200559.

Who can nominate?

Governments of UNESCO Member States via their Permanent Delegations to UNESCO, and non-governmental organizations in official partnership with UNESCO can make up to 3 nominations. Self-nominations are not accepted. 

Who can be nominated?

Individual's, institutions or organizations advancing girls' and women's education through an established and ongoing project or programme which has been running for at least 2 years. Visit the Prize's website for more details. 

How to Nominate?

Nominations must be submitted in English or French by a UNESCO Member State or an NGO in official partnership with UNESCO, via an online platform, no later than 24 May 2024 (midnight, Paris time). 
Please do not get confused, this deadline is for the Government of Nepal or UNESCO not for individual organizations or people who will be applying via government or in official partnership with UNESCO.
