The Bihari Krishna Fellowship for Ethnographic Research was established in 2011 with a grant of Rs 5 million provided by Bihari Krishna Shrestha to Social Science Baha with the express purpose of setting up a fellowship devoted to ethnographic research in Nepal.

Proposals are requested to convert PhD dissertations into books under the Bihari Krishna Fellowship for Ethnographic Research managed jointly by the Central Department of Anthropology (CDA), Tribhuvan University, and Social Science Baha.


The PhD dissertation-to-book fellowship will be an opportunity for graduates of the CDA to turn their doctoral thesis into a book.

Duration of the fellowship: Six months

Number of fellowships offered: 1 (one)

Eligibility:

  1. Applicant must be a PhD graduate of the CDA at Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, in the past 10 years. (Those who have not yet completed their PhD are ineligible for this fellowship.)
  2. The selected fellow shall not engage in any other paid or unpaid work during the fellowship period and shall submit a written declaration agreeing to this condition at the time of application.
  3. Applications are limited to Nepali citizens

Benefits:

  1. The selected fellow shall receive a stipend of NPR 300,000 (three hundred thousand rupees only) over the period of fellowship. The stipend shall be paid in equal monthly instalments over a period of six months.
  2. The fellow will also be allowed to access the SSB library and will be provided all the facilities available at the library.

Publication of book

CDA and SSB shall undertake to publish the book that is produced through the fellowship, provided it meets the standard acceptable to both CDA and SSB. Should the selected fellow, however, decide to seek a third-party publisher, s/he shall be free to do so provided the Bihari Krishna Fellowship in Ethnographic Research and both CDA and SSB are duly acknowledged.

The language of the book can be either Nepali or English.

Application requirements

  1. Letter from the CDA attesting that the applicant is a PhD graduate of the CDA in the last 10 years.
  2. Written declaration stating that the applicant is willing to abide by the above condition of not engaging in any paid or unpaid work during the fellowship period.
  3. One-page CV.
  4. Personal statement (not exceeding 800 words).
  5. One chapter of the PhD dissertation that will be converted into a book.

Since the fellowship will initially be awarded on a rolling basis, there is no fixed timeline for undertaking it.
