The Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science (IAAS) is a self-contained academic center of Tribhuvan University that offers courses in agriculture, animal sciences, and veterinary medicine. IAAS was founded in 1957 as a School under the Ministry of Agriculture to train Junior Technical Assistants (JTAs) in agriculture. The school became a College of Agriculture in 1968, and a two-year Intermediate of Agricultural Science (I.Sc.Ag.) program was established. Tribhuvan University upgraded the College of Agriculture to the Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science in 1972. Until that time, the institute did not have its buildings and facilities, and it operated in Jagdamba Bhawan in Pulchowk, Kathmandu. The institute was moved from Kathmandu to Rampur in Chitwan in 1974. IAAS established two branch campuses: one at Sundarbazar, Lamjung, in 1975, and the other in Paklihawa, Rupandehi, in 1978.
The institute aims to advance agricultural science and prepare the workforce for agriculture development through teaching, research, and extension. The institute's primary goals are to design and implement educational programs that strike a good balance between established and emerging needs in the agricultural sector, introduce innovative teaching, research, and technology dissemination methods, and promote research and studies that address the needs of the country's farmers. Through competent human resource development, the institute has demonstrated its academic superiority. Since its founding, the IAAS has been working tirelessly to address issues of concern in agricultural education in Nepal. Many of the previous initiatives have been adjusted and upgraded throughout time to better fit their roles in addressing the country's pressing needs and goals in the agricultural sector.
