Tribhuvan University (TU) Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Keshar Jung Baral has submitted his resignation to the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers. Baral, who was appointed for a four-year term, cited health reasons for his decision, addressing his resignation to Prime Minister and TU Chancellor. However, his resignation has not yet been approved.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Baral has been suffering from prostate-related health issues. Attempts to contact him for clarification were unsuccessful. Sources close to him stated that after submitting his resignation, he traveled to Pokhara.

Pressure and Challenges at TU

Baral was appointed as TU Vice-Chancellor on Falgun 10, 2080 BS by then-Prime Minister and Chancellor Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’. His tenure, however, was marked by significant administrative challenges, particularly concerning the appointment of high-level university officials and college/campus chiefs.

Additionally, TU has been facing ongoing disputes related to temporary and contract-based teachers and staff, who have long demanded permanent positions through internal competition. This matter remained unresolved due to a Supreme Court ruling that prohibited permanent appointments through internal competition. The issue led to persistent protests, further complicating university management.

Uncertain Future for TU Leadership

With Baral’s resignation under consideration, university sources suggest that other senior officials may also step down. If accepted, his resignation could lead to further instability in the administration of Nepal’s largest and oldest university.

The developments at Tribhuvan University highlight the ongoing challenges in managing faculty employment, governance, and leadership, raising concerns about the institution's future direction.
